Oh NO!!! Poor guy - I hope he and DH find help this morning! So are the quills barbed? Is that why they can't be pulled out? Criminey, I just wouldn't have any idea what to do.

Yup, they are barbed & require the dog be asleep on anesthesia as each quill may be deeper & require a bit of cutting to get them out.
Bummer !!!!
Poor Jack, they cannot even put an anesthesia cone on his muzzle for any gas when they do the removal.
Luckily, the vets out here are very used to this sort of thing.

I had a friend years ago, whose Black lab repeatedly & deliberately went after sticker pigs. It was as if he wanted revenge! Hope jack learns this first time to leave them alone !!!!!!!!!!!

I hear ya about opening the gate. I think it would be cheaper and easier to do the apron idea, but bury it a few inches deep. The description I read to put the wire in concrete seems like a lot of work to me, not to mention the added expense of the concrete. Also, maybe you'd only have to bury the apron in just the part to let the gate open. (Not sure that last sentence made sense).

Yes, that does make sense. We'll have to mess around out there and see what we can come up with. Fortunately, we're building on the grass, and we plan to move everything into place, so we can continue working on the run while we try to figure out what to do with the ground. My kids will have to walk their bikes through a thin area between the run and the house, we don't want any scratched up legs or popped tires.

We have ours (hardware cloth on the pnes) buried 12" in the dirt and the mink went right under it.
So we dug the dirt back up & poured concrete in it, dry, easy to do with the shovel...then sprinkled water on it & covered it back up the next day with the dirt.

My husband doesn't think we have mink here, but who knows. We do have a raccoon and opossum problem. We frequently see dead opossums in our neighborhood streets. Do opossums dig, anyone know?

Chickielady, I think that's similar to what my husband was talking about doing. My SIL gave us a huge roll of 1" chicken wire that had been left at her home by previous owners, which we are not using on the run or coop. We have 1/2" hardware cloth for the run and 1/4" hardware cloth for the coop. He was planning on cutting it to size, then putting a thin coat (1/2") of concrete mix over the top. The wire would be the predator proofing and the concrete would keep the chickens from hurting their feet as they scratched and dug. He planned to fill the floor back in with screened dirt and whatever ground cover we end up choosing.

Fortunately, digging out the area won't be too difficult. It's more a matter of smoothing it out. Whatever we choose, ground work has to be done. There's a significant hole in the area already (which is what gave my husband the idea). With our children's blessing, we reclaimed our children's digging area for the coop/run. They actually had the area pretty well dug down because they were trying to dig to the other side of the world.

(My DH is a skydive instructor out here in Shelton).

My hubby gave up skydiving when we moved here. Not enough nice days a year to do it . How can your hubby make enough money as an instructor with the crappy weather we have?

random post. i looked close at a chick and noticed something odd. it has two claws on each wing. i have never noticed this on adult birds....

If you look at the birds from the supermarket, or your own, you can see the little pointy bits on each wing. (Julia Childs call them nubbins)I just cut them off when I cook them.

An added thought... the "biggest job" to this whole thing will be filling the area back in with dirt, as my children's mother (yeah, me) had a habit of running off with the dirt that the children dug up and using it for garden beds. So, through the years, the hole just got bigger, and bigger, and bigger...

do you even call them back? I never do. I wait until someone genuinely interested writes me a real message. When I listed the chain link fencing, I got ***4*** of those stupid one-liners and ***1*** genuine interest e-mail. Annoying!

I email them from an email address I don't care if I get spam and ask if they would like to come over and look at it.

Jack had a few extra whiskers this morning.
he was chained to his dog house, and still we have never seen a porcupine here except the dead one on the road 2 weeks ago.
Having a great run with wildlife this month...........

To make matters worse, our Vet is out of the office today, so we have been referred to another.
DH is driving Jack around now to the referral vet.
Poor guy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yesterday i acquired 3 new birds. Swedish Flower Hens, they are simialr to my icelandics and share a common ancestor. I got a new icelandic rooster a month ago Lundi from Vala. He is a direct import from iceland and my hens are from the 2004 import so i have a healthy diversity now.

I have gone crazy on hatching and have more ducks that i know what to do with......

and yesterday as i was imprinting the ducklings one was struggling and not imprinting until i talked.... and i realized this duckling is blind...... i have no clue what to do... it has white eyes.... sad it hatched into this world in the dark.....

so i have many things for sale and ads on craigslist.

i am still searching for a job and have had many interviews but nothing yet.....

I asked my cousin how long my Uncle Bryon has owned it but he doesn't know. My guess is 20yrs of owning it & 30yrs of working there. Are you talking the James's own property over near Tanwax? I don't remember a car lot & I grew up with my mom taking us over to the feed store about every other month for dog food. Even at their own property. Maybe that was with the first owners of it. My Uncle has always had a lot of farm animals, horses were my Aunt's & then chickens, ducks, peafowl, peacocks, rabbits, cows, geese, house bird or 2, dogs, cats etc.

the car lot was between webster rd feed and meridian st. was called peterson and sons auto sales. in 1999 the mobile home burned down. (my mom's house), a year or so later the big house caught fire... Then the property was sold. Only thing still the same is the garage. it was definately a long time ago... lol
