Does it work to have a coop/run with secondary coop/hutch in the run, and will the different birds return to their respective "homes" each night?

Maybe and yes....

You have to coop them for at least a week in their personal coop before they will home roost.... but I have 3 coops... all 3 coops free range in my yard.. all three go back to their coop. every once in awhile one will cross coop but not often.

the mutual run might be a issue.... if you can divide it in half with coops on each end at least for awhile then they can learn to mingle. But I never introduce my juvies to adults in a confined area.... they all meet while free in the yard so there is room to run and hide.

Would keeping 3 of them in that tiny hutch for a full week be mean? Or are you talking about partitioning the run (which could be done I think) and letting them have access to their tiny coop and part of the run?  Gah! Now you've got me hooked! Heck, I even want to just take the hutch out of the run entirely and put it on the other side of the backyard, but then they wouldn't have a run if I needed them confined for some reason...

LOL

The best would be to divide the run for a little while until they get used to everything, and everybody gets used to each other....
Or build a little second run  :D :gig

if your up my way just let me know... as long as you don't mind the projects from heck messes then you can see it all.. including the little bugs running with my large fowl flock. some of them little boogers get in and fight the big ones for food.

To the men on here - ahem... you know who you are.

Yes, I know to check for dead batteries. The mouse was flashing low battery, I changed batts putting them in exactly like the original set was positioned. Nothing. I tried a second set of batts (expiration date 2016) still nothing. I have changed batteries for this cordless mouse many times. But I think it just gave up the ghost. The off/on switch expired also - or maybe THAT was the reason for failure. If I can't bring the mouse back to life, I will eventually get another cordless one, Free spirits aren't meant to be chained.

Hi! You're up late too ;)

Yep. Taking a break for an extremely late dinner. We never made it to the camp site today. We're trying to go tomorrow early a.m.

We got the run finished and fully automated. I built the last bit today - two roosts and the framework for the nipple watering system. I was on my own with that as DH had to get working on the boat. After that, I had to start focusing on shopping for supplies and packing.

I'm pretty sore and tired. I singlehandedly stapled all of the hardware cloth around the coop and run with a hand-held stapler - that took a LOT of staples since I stapled one about every inch. I went through about 2 and a half boxes of staples. I absolutely LOVE the coop and run. The chickens do, too. That thing is about as predator proof as we'll ever get. It was worth the effort. It has a concrete floor buried about 6" below the dirt with a drainage system that's about 12" down. Nothing's going to dig through that - unless it can break through concrete with chicken wire embedded in it or tunnel through the rocks in the drainage system. With 1/2" hardware cloth on the run and 1/4" hardware cloth on the coop, it's about a tight as it can be.

Our friend who is chicken sitting was surprised when he saw it and was very happy that all he needed to worry about was making sure the automatic pop door doesn't have issues and that the chickens actually make it out of coop each day so they have access to food and water.

We love to have happy pet-sitters!
