ok so today is the day the turkeys are SUPPOSE to hatch... so far NOTHING! I think I may be a day or 2 off because the temp in that one bator likes to stay about .5 degrees below what I aim for.

Went down and checked on the banty bunch I got from Nyrial..... man those guys are so darn cute!!! And YES they are not in with the rest of my flock!!! I will NEVER talk bad about Bantams again!!!

I am posting this here because I can't ship in the heat....

I currently have some silkie and showgirl chicks, most are black, although I do have a couple partridge, PQ and BQ, for sale. They are from my exhibition birds.

I also have available two Jan hatch runner duck hens from a white holderread drake over a holderread saxony colored runner hen. Both of them are fawn (saxony) in color and are laying large green eggs. I am only keeping whites, and I no longer have their mother (she went to another breeder). They are not SQ, but would be good for anyone who wants to work on this color.

I live in the Tri-cities, but am coming to Seattle next weekend and I could meet people on Friday as I get into town. MUST meet on Friday as I can't have the birds where I am visiting (in downtown Seattle).

congrats on the new hatchlings.

good news, the tolbunt is pipped. the hole is about the size of my pinky nail so I'm leaving so I don't have watch every second. I'll get pictures uploaded tonight if the connection speed gods are kind.

It's been a long day so far. the bear just destroyed 2 of 3 hives this am. I'm on my way to beez kneez to get new queens as I cannot find them in the mess of what's left. there are bees everywhere and broken hive parts and my throat hurts where I got too excited and didn't zip my suit tightly enough and got stung. bugger!

hope the rest of the day improves.

Oh wow! I'm glad I don't have to deal with bears (the eagles have wreaked more than enough havoc around here). And so sorry to hear about the hives. Will the bears continue to be a problem? What can you do to protect them? Hope things go well with the Tolbunt and it doesn't make you wait tooo long.

Just curious if either of your Blacks ever started quacking. My two Splash guys are just starting to sound hoarse and I think there is no chance either of them will be a 'she' (which is okay as I've got tooooo many eggs). But I also can't imagine all four would be drakes.

p.s. I've got another batch due to hatch between the 28 and 30th (anyone else looking for Runner babies? -- if they hatch, I'm expecting Blues, Blacks and Splash).

I think if I had pheasant chicks the coyotes would be even MORE desperate to get at my crew. Hope someone has the right set up and can take advantage of your crazy generosity today

I'm so sad today... My favorite little roo died. He was a french blue copper marans named smokey and he was 4 1/2 months old... was such a calm little guy and beautiful. He was being pecked at by the other chicks in that coop and was bleeding so I took him inside for a couple days so he'd stop bleeding. He seemed to be doing fine and all so I put that no-peck goop on there and put him back out in the coop this morning. This afternoon, I went back out there and he was dead. I wonder if it was stress from being pecked at so much and the heat and all. They did run out of water in the time that he was in there so maybe everyone else got water first and he didn't get any? I don't know. It was 2 whole gallons but they're not used to this heat. Lots of ventilation there. I just got done cutting two more big windows in the coop the other day. *sigh* I keep asking why it couldn't have been that mean EE roo instead of him. I was really looking forward to hearing him crow and seeing his tail feathers grow... him being a daddy maybe, but nope, his life is cut short

Maybe he was just too calm and the other chickens took it as him being a weak rooster?

on the other hand, of my blue ameraucanas that I got, 3 look to be roos and only 1 a pullet. I guess I'll just have 2 blue ameraucana roos instead of 1 and 1fbcm. (The other one is claimed). *sigh* Such is life.

La Sombra, I am SOOOO sorry about your little roo. It seems it's all too easy to make the wrong call with our birds. I got lucky today, but it could have been bad... I happened to be outside and heard one of the little bantam ducklings (they are about five weeks old!) PEEPING like mad. He couldn't get out of the swimming pool. They've been in and out of the pool for a week solid with no problems, the brick stepping stones were in there usual places, but I think I wasn't far away from a tragedy, he was saturated and cold. It's a wonder the wild ones survive as well as they do with nature. Sometimes I feel like I'm a bigger danger than the predators.

Anyway my heart goes out to you. There must have been something the other birds sensed to have picked on him so bad, but still some of us get terribly fond of the more vulnerable birds in our flocks.

sitting at my desk and looked up to see a wasp nest being built above my head!!! Last year there was a nest in our attic, we had no clue until they ate through the drywall in the office ceiling.... we thought we killed them all and nothing has moved up there at all for nearly a year! I wouldn't care so much if I weren't deathly allergic to all bees/wasps/hornets.... and having no clue yet if my 4 year old is or not.!!!!!!!!!
