If you haven't done it next time you go to the falls there is a great hike we took with our kids who were right around your kids age back then down to the bottom of the falls. Great hike for kids. Beautiful. And they get a good perspective of things down below how huge that drop really is.

That was our plan...last year and this year. But the trail has been closed for 2 years, and still won't be open until summer 2013. They are doing major work on the falls and the trails and we couldn't go. Next time...next time!

My girls are out and about happy as larks. Just gave them some watermelon treats. Completely ignored me while they gobbled up the watermelon.
I got 2 new birds from Carol of RisingStar. English Orps, 1 blue, 1 black. One of my girls is not happy and she was really, really was vocal yesterday when I first brought them home. Today is somewhat better but the girls are free ranging and the newbies have the run to themselves. Seems like they are enjoying themselves.
I kept them in the large dog carrier I have, and use to transport the little ladies home, last night and they were fine. They have plenty of room.
When I went out with their wm treats they all were ignoring the newbies so perhaps all is going well. I hope so.

Anyone want this little guy? He was given to me and the gal thought he was a pullet (seemed so for a while as well) but I've asked all around and he's definitely a cockeral. No wonder Ricky hates this one in particular. Marans/EE x, 12-ish weeks old. I'm in Covington 98042 and he's free to a good home or freezer.

Jessica, I can not believe your beautiful creek ran dry! Wow. That must be strange. It was so pretty and full when I was over there.

Greg, I agree with your post. My only thought about it is what may be misconstrued as "worry" may just be newbies (like me) trying to learn what to do to avoid costly mistakes.

Other than reading books and attending a class prior to getting my chicks, I had never even touched a chick before I bought mine in April. I don't foresee burn-out because I'm researching problems before they arise. I actually feel more confident about raising chickens than ever.

You see, in our day and age, many (dare I say "most") kids don't have access to farms. The knowledge and experience has not been handed down, like it had for years, and years, prior. All of this comes natural to someone who has been raised around it. My mom was raised on a farm. I was raised in the city of Seattle, long before "city chickens" were acceptable. My mom had been born with club feet and was unable to garden. We didn't have chickens, she couldn't care for them. So, I wasn't raised around either. I know a lot about both now - but what I know has come from taking classes, being involved in clubs, and learning from others who have similar hobbies as my own.

Because I am taking the time to learn how to take proper care of my chickens, my children are having the benefit of growing up learning some of the skills of former generations - they will instinctively "know" how to care for chickens. If they choose to have chickens of their own as adults, they won't have to do the research, because they grew up immersed in it.

If people "disappear" off this site, it may not be because they were burned out. It may be because they no longer needed the site because raising chickens became second-nature.

Yep, it's seasonal and we only have it for half the year! I kinda wish it was year round because I miss the sound of it during the summer. Glad you're back and had a nice trip to the lake.

Jessica, if you can't find him a home, let us know. As long as I'm not around, my bird-hunter husband can (ahem) put him in the freezer. Darn! That is so difficult to write. LOL! We eat chicken all the time... the packaged kind, or the the various kinds of fowl that I never saw before he shot them.
