I lost a chick to a hawk today. We were all outside, kids running, yelling, playing and all of a sudden out of nowhere darts down this small hawk and snatched up a baby FROM UNDER A TREE! less than 50 ft away from where a friend and I were sitting in the yard.
I got up and ran yelling, arms flailing, when I saw it coming down but I was too late

Such an awful feeling watching it fly away

I don't know if I already responded to this or not, this week has been busy crazy. I just wanted to say I'm so sorry. That must have been such a horrible experience.

That is what they have claimed but them duck people are all qwacked up and will say most anything to sell duck or quail eggs, However my neighbors DD is allergic to chicken eggs but can eat duck and quail eggs.

That's good to know... but, if they are slimy and gross - that may be hard to get used to. If they are bigger and used in baking, how many chicken eggs equals 1 duck egg?

Out of 4 "sexed" chicks this year, I ended up with 2 roosters and can't keep them. Both are Speckled Sussex and 14+weeks old. Located in Duvall. Free!

Welcome to everyone new I am new also i got my first chickens in march. i now have 65 chickens and 5 ducks.i have wyandottes, rir, barred rocks, black australorps,and the coolest of all 3 little fluffy silkies. they are so much fun to watch they think they are so big,they look at my hens like do not bother me. I also have learned so much here since joining. Hope to keep learning and rising chickens.

Whoa! You just started, and you have 65 chickens?! Boy, am I jealous....Watch out for the chicken math. You'll have 187 before you know it.

Looking to adopt a bantam Frizzle Cochin rooster! I figured I would try here before craigslist.

Hi again!

I don't have one in-hand yet, but I wanted to let you know I have 6 mixed bantam Cochin eggs in lockdown now. They are from Zookeeper in the June egg swap and she described the pen as:

There are Black Cochins (roo & hens), Partridge Cochins (roo & hens),a black frizzle hen, a bantam RIR hen, and some kind of Silkie cross roo all in there. We get 1 cross out of 3 that we hatch out of there. Most are Black Cochins. The rest are from that silkie cross roo. They either have 5 toes or black skin.

Sounds like there's a chance of a Frizzle roo! I can let you know how the hatch goes.

Gene pool? Try gene puddle! And no offense, Packwood people. You know we're right! If you live in Packwood, it's either because you belong to The Founding Families, or because you moved there to retire.

Somebody's gonna be mad at me pretty soon. I'm in a hole, so I better stop digging!

Lots of sad pet news this week. We are having our own pet changes. I had my daughter and her (leased) horse evaluated yesterday day by a new trainer. She confirmed what I had been thinking about these last few months. He is just about done. He is stiff and not moving well, has no energy and I have other concerns about him. We have had him with us for 3 years. His owner is moving to Boston and I don't know what will happen with him. So this week begins the difficult conversations about what to do with Spec. My horse is old too but you would never know it. He shows no signs of slowing down and would be too much horse for my daughter and our 3rd horse is still a baby. So we are off this morning to let my daughter have a lesson on the trainers horse and if all goes well, she will show that horse tomorrow.
