Just stopped in to say HI!

Welcome, for all the new peeps I missed. Is everyone enjoying this crazy weather? Had to move DD's pony party to this coming Friday because of this darn weather not making up it's mind.
Hope all is well with y'all. Later.

Sad day today. I got home late Friday night so I didn't go out right away to peek in the chicken coop. The next morning as I saw them roaming around I counted three missing. I found the feather piles today, the first one I found really sunk my heart - it was Henny Penny's feathers, a BUNCH, which makes me feel good that maybe she put up a huge fight. No blood, no chicken parts anywhere, but there was coyote scat nearby.

Henny Penny gave me my first ever fresh egg back in March.

She was always the first one to run up to me when I came out. She took one for the team - she was the oldest and since my cockerals are still young, she was always the alarm sounder (I know this because of my silly cat).

My favorite Buff Orp roo is gone, Fred (I still have Frank, though), and I also lost an EE pullet. Down to 11 hens, 3 cockerals.

OK enough whining. I didn't need that many birds anyway. So, quick question.....

Why would a hen fight a cockeral? I just watched one of my Barred Rocks fighting with my LH - the lead roo wannabe. The LH is maybe a month younger than she is, she just started laying in June.

I was thinking maybe he was trying to jump her and she said "H**** no!"

Migraines are the worst I have had chronic migraines for years... Have you tried caffeine? Sipping on coffee or soda helps me sometimes.... Hope you feel better soon.

Mealworm French Fries
Ingredients:

  • 4 U.S. grade No. 1 fresh potatoes (Idaho potatoes)
  • 2 dozen mealworms – boiled but not roasted
  • 1 cup chopped scallions
  • ½ teaspoon smoked salt
Directions:
Cut and slice potatoes into preferred style, i.e. shoestring, etc. Keep the skin on to enhance the homemade appearance and flavor. If you prefer to peel your potatoes, please keep in mind that fries made from peeled potatoes should be chilled after cutting in cold water for 10 minutes to 30 minutes before frying, to ensure maximum crispiness and to prevent them from sticking together while frying.
Deep fry potatoes, mealworms and scallions together for 3 minutes in proper temperature oil. The oil is the proper temperature when the fries don’t sink when dropped in and bubbles remain on top of the oil. Always use clean oil to fry potatoes.
Tips: A little known chef’s secret to prevent the potatoes from darkening is to add citrus acid or vinegar to the water solution. Also in order to avoid water spattering and to reduce fat absorption spin dry potatoes as much as possible before frying. In order to get really crispy and tasty fries, fry them twice.

Don't know what to do, DH is done working on the chicken stuff.

Um... you have a chicken friend who is very handy (and has lots of tools).

I know exactly how to critter proof that space below the rafters. I'd help ya! We can make a girl's day of it.

My step-dad was a carpenter. At the age of 9, I got stuck helping him build our house. The man was crazy - had to have a 5,000 sq. foot house - and no business doing so. He didn't have the money to build a house that big. The house was never completed while in his possession - but the years growing up with him taught us three kids a lot about building, so it was good for something. The first floor was completed before I was a teen. The 2nd floor was complete by the time I was in my 20's. The third floor was finally complete when he was in his 80s. Just before he completed the very last bit, he died. Sad, sad, sad. I always wondered why we couldn't have just been normal and had a normal-sized, finished house.
