I have never seen a gardner snake large enough to eat a chick. A small egg, yes, but a chick, no.

Even a bantam egg would be hard to get down for most snakes in Western WA.

Now if you're in Eastern WA - it's a different story.
hi everyone
i lived in SC for many years there are no snake big enough out here in western WA to eat a egg or snake. The rat snake in SC could and i have seen five to six feet long. They would kill one quickly and they were not even poisonous. There many different poisonous kinds.

I've seen rubber boas big enough to eat an egg. I've seen skinny garter snakes eat slugs 4x their girth. Their jaws unhinge amazingly far. (Sorry for that image, snake-haters!) But I would not worry about snakes in WW. I'd worry *for* the snakes. Snakes seem kind of slooooooooow here in the PNW, relatively. I think the heat makes the SE snakes fast and bold and ornery.

Just for my own peace of mind...has anyone else ever had their birds come down with something like this that didn't go away on its' own? What they have is simply a cold, or so it seems. They sneeze, honk occasionally like a cough maybe?? and there's a teensy bit of nasal discharge. No weird poops. No decline in eating or drinking, they behave just fine and spunky as usual. But they've had this for over 4-5 weeks and it's not going away or getting worse. Does it even sound like something serious?
Actually mine have the same thing right now. I have them on the bleach water mix (we are on well water) but need to get ahold of the Denagard as well. Hope yours get better real soon.

Can I leave them within these confines for 2.5 days, when they are used to being let out everyday, all day ?

or....

Would it be better for me to leave their run door open so they can get in and out, leaving them open for a visit from the coyote that frequents here ?

Thoughts ?
I would keep them confined to the coop/run. I wouldn't take chances.

So this isn't CRD or something like MG, correct? I have just been worried that my flock is somehow damaged and I have to have a closed flock, no one leaves, no new birds, etc. I have gotten new ones because in the case of CRD I wouldn't cull my backyard flock, but I'd like to know that if I wanted to get rid of a bird or two I could do so without risking others' flocks. What my flock has seems pretty harmless though, which doesn't seem to me like what CRD, MG, etc are all about. Those seem much worse!!

Only the rattlesnakes and only if they are cornered or stepped on!!! The heat sure makes ME ornery, though, hahaha!

Quote: Well yes and no. See the ounce of prevention you refer to IMO would be the very mild chlorine solution to prevent them from getting sick.

And just to be clear to ALL Sorry but if you haven't notice I do not get the whole noun, pronoun, verb, adverb stuff. No kidding I can't tell one from another but can surely express myself and even in a rather colorful manner at times if pushed.

I am who I am and that is all I will ever be.

OK ya all can now enjoy the next 4 days as I will be gone to the DUNES !

and won't have net access unless I can hijack jbear's phone in camp. Don't count on that happening she tends to keep pretty close track of it.
