Quote: It is hard to eat INSIDE my house. I have a "free ranging" house bird. Tonight we are having great big salads with lots of vegetables and spagetti....Bumble is trying to eat off my plate. She is worse than the dogs. I throw her on the floor....she comes back up on my knee. she is a brat. spoiled rotten bird.

Welcome. Fun site. Great people. Lots of information.

Howdy folks, I'm on Union Hill and I raise Icelandic chickens. I picked Icelandic chickens because I'm an Icelandic chick myself! Here are some pics of my homestead flock, they're still young, 6-7 months old.

This is Prímus:

And his ladies, Kara, Skráma, and Sirrí:

There are a few more photos in my album, from when they were younger in https://www.backyardchickens.com/gallery/image/view/id/5224211/album/6120001

They are awesome birds, very active, curious, and friendly. I love them so much, I could watch their backyard antics all day long

I've been trying to catch up since I've returned, but still have 90 pages to go!

Got home from Hawaii in the wee hours of Wednesday. Sorry to have brought the cold and the rain back with me again. I will gladly bring it back to Hawaii with me, just take up a collection for my airfare and a place to stay.

People there were complaining about unseasonable cold weather. I thought it was great. upper 60's to low 70's the few days in Oahu and low 70's in Maui. The one place where I did feel a bit chilled was when we were staying in Volcano Village on the Big Island. Up at 4,000 feet the temp was usually between 53 and 63. We had to buy sweat shirts. I loved it there too - funny, almost everyone selling their goods at the Volcano Farmers Marke was a Pacific Northwest transplant! I guess they missed the cold and wet enough to move up that high, and now they make a living by selling huge bags of arugula or basil for $1! I could not believe the good prices at the farmers market. I also bought honey, bread, lettuce, breakfast .... It's an early market, starts at 6 am. if you get there after 7, lots of stuff has already sold out! The market was busy. I was surprised that the low asking prices were enough to keep the locals in Keen shoes and Polartec Fleece. Maybe it was the eggs - they sold for $5 per dozen at the market.

My little tomato plants which I started from seed were less that 2 inches tall when we left, now they are almost 2 feet! Everything in my greenhouse grew like mad, but in the garden, the weeds grew much faster than the vegetables. I am having trouble finding them amongst the weeds. Each bed sprouted a different type of weed.
