One should also never sit outside with their dinner while the chickens are out and about. They will find you and do their very best to forcibly take your food away. If you're bored and need entertainment, you can always chase a family member out of the house while they're eating and release the chickens. I highly recommend it.
I am really happy to know that I am not the only person that thinks of things like this.

Just another comment on Foxglove... in Washington, it is considered a noxious weed and is supposed to be destroyed. I know... it's pretty, but, I'm sure the state has it's reasons for classifying it as such.

Actually - now I'm not finding it on the list. I'm almost positive it used to be there. I looked it up a long time ago when I thought I would plant it. Here's the noxious weed list...

As in...Little Miss Muffet? Cute!

We named our chicks according to habits/characteristics that we noticed during their first few days. Muffet would frequently plop down on my hand (her tuffet). Pudge had the cutest fat fuzzy face, Pengin looked exactly like a penguin chick (I was referencing South Park too), and George was very curious when the feed store guy picked a dead chick out of the bin. She rushed over to see what was going on and I snatched her up. People think I'm crazy when I talk about my 'kids' and they find out that I'm talking about chickens.

I also enjoy chasing my fiancee out to say hello to the chicks. They love to peck and scratch at his toes and it gives me a short break from their constant (violent) affection. I argue that he's strengthening his bond with them so he can't weasel out of it.

Quote: Okay I will admit to being squeamish and girly girl about some things. I am not sure why I wear gloves when processing my own birds, but I don't have any problems with cleaning out a store bought bird. (It's probably the amount of warm guts, as opposed to cold leftover bits.)

DH has some super thick latex gloves that work fairly well. I still have to watch things and they don't tend to last very long with my long acrylic nails. I think I am going to get some Nitrile gloves for this weekend. They are a bit tougher.

We will have to be very careful with the very very sharp knives no matter what.

Renee - how are you holding up without DS1? Is he having fun??
I have no idea! I sure hope he's having fun. The camp doesn't let parents contact the kids. They've found kids will adapt better if they don't. If he's homesick, they will wait 2 days before they contact us - then we can talk to him and decide if he stays on or not. Hopefully, by 2 days in, he'll be fine.

We signed him up for a super fun (expensive - eek!) program. In the morning he either does archery, BB gun, tomohawk or sling shots. Plus, he'll make his own bow and arrow sometime during the week. In the afternoon, he will either play on a mountain waterslide, climb a climbing wall tower, shoot at targets with a paintball gun, ride in a 4x4 off-road vehicle on a scavenger hunt or go climbing with mountain boards on.

I'm hoping he'll be too tired to be homesick! That was the plan when we added the shooting and adventure program to his basic camp.

As for me... yesterday was a rough day. Today, the littlest boy has talked my ear off - so I didn't have time to get all emotional about my oldest being gone.

Yeah I'm used to sharp knives...DH sells Cutco knives as a Realtor Rep. He was #2 in the company last month

I'll bring a few things, any idea what types of knives are needed in processing? Trimmer? Chef knife?
