Hi Goldfawn & all the other new BYC'ers (and the not so new ones)! Haha

We live by Northgate in the Pinehurst neighborhood of Seattle.
Besides BYC, there's a meet-up group of Seattleites which is much less active than this forum. You can check that out too!

Ok.... so I am about to throw in the towel after this morning....I finally finished my flight pen....put my pheasants in it....Woke up and went down there this morning only to find my entire flock of pheasants massacred. I am assuming it was a raccoon due to the fact that it simply popped the heads off of most of them!!! I am so mad and sad right now!!!!

Realized too that I am missing a few chickens as well!

Ok, I spent 2 days by myself putting up netting, now I need to take ALL the netting down and replace it all with chicken wire I can't really afford!!! I am so upset and at this point am tempted to give up. I love my chickens and pheasant but this is just getting to be too much!!!

Thanks for letting me vent.

Jessica,

I'm so incredibly sorry about your work being ruined and all your birds being killed!

I think most of us have had similar types of things and can completely empathize with your loss. Doesn't make it better, I know.

goldfawn, UrbanGirls and lacasitarojafarm,
Nice to see so many new people.

Sorry about the troubles some of you are having.

Russ

BTW- My mind works oddly in heat. I got curious about my first post. Had to go look it up. It was on this thread #752.

Well, I am going to push forward.... tomorrow (on the hottest day yet!) I plan to put chicken wire in every conceivable place to prevent any further loss of life! I can't give up, I love my critters too dang much!

We have a similar issue with our Bassets - the dumb one (they are both dumb, one is even dumber) Doodle went right up to our alpha hen and tried to lick her. Scarlet gave him the stink eye and when he darted forward again, she pecked him right in the forehead. He hasn't bothered any of them since.

Doodle is the one on the far right, the red and white one!

jessica that really sucks. I hope that you can stick it out. Varmit keep away gets more fun when you win more often. I keep reminding myself that the number of birds who die of old age is nearly zero.

on the subject of chickens stalking cats. my ferocious hunter cat tried to take on my RIR and a EE. PECK! Now he sticks to harrassing the mille fleurs.

time to go brave the heat to practice my dressage tests. My horse is going to think I'm nuts.

Oh, what beautiful babies (dogs and hens). I bet Doodle was just "tasting" the hen to see if she was tasty or not. Chickens do do a good job of giving the stink eye, don't they?

Ok now THAT is something I would love to see!

Next time I will have to hurry and take a photo. Rebel (the cat) was just not impressed that these giant black/white feathery things were following him. He (rebel the cat) laid in the grass and the tip of his tail was twitching.

Jessica, sorry to hear about your troubles. When I got up this morning, a critter (raccoon) got one of our EE's. She was still alive, it fortunately was only able to get one of it's wings. Brought it into the vet who was able to do a better amputation than the critter is. She so far is still alive. I have her inside next to me while we are recovering from our day. Ugh!

Good luck with your rewiring!
