I struggled to get a very good pic today, but here are two: I just know that if I bathed him he would be unbelievably fluffy. Would love to see pics of your lavenders!

I've already put a few gallon jugs of water in the freezer in case the chooks get too hot and need "air conditioning" throughout the day. Love the nice weather, though!

I didn't see this thread until recently. I am from Mount Vernon WA. I raise a mixed flock of Araucanas, Barred Rocks, Orpington's and Naked Necks. I don't have any laying eggs yet. This is our first year.

i blame byc for not being online in a few weeks..... it hasnt sent me subscription updates like it should.....

so i have a major problem:

alright i have a hen that hs been on the decline for a few days now. at first i wrote it off as dehydration because i had a chicken just like it a week ago that flew out of the pen and went all day without water... but this hen wasn't thirsty. it would just sit around.

i placed it in a separate pen. and today finally added antibiotics to its water... the kind for respiratory bacteria....

but i am clueless as to what it has. i assumed respiratory cos we have alot of wild birds around. but it hasnt coughed or weezed as far as i can tell.....

my other hens are fine. ok the fact that i know this hen is really really sick is because it is one of the flightyer ones and that i can walk up to it and knock it over with my toe and it does nothing sets alarms off.

when i gave the hen a few drops of the medicated water it did nothing... opened its beak to try and force a few drops in and there was theis cloudy liquid slime (like human phlegm) in its beak... its crop feels the same size as the day before not completely empty but less that a 1/4 cup of stuff in it.

when it walks it staggers.

what is wrong with it? i feel bad that i just sits there all day with its eyes shut. she was a great egg layer.

she is over a year old. i got her and a few other hens a few months ago from a friend wanting out of chickens .... the rest are fine.

when it pooed this morning it was liquid. a little brownish green but really liquid.

hopefully this wont affect the rest of my flock.////

Sounds like Mareks. I just put my Polish rooster down on Saturday because of it (he was stumbling when he walked, which prompted us to take him to the vet and confirm our suspicions). Even if they are vaccinated it still does happen sometimes. The staggering might be due to paralysis in one of the legs/wings, and Mareks affects the eyes, which might explain the eyes closed.

That I'm not so sure on- maybe due to dehydration? I know my guy would not drink anything, even when I put 100% apple, grape and cran-raspberry juice in front of him. He would eat apples, though. Towards day 2 he was looking fairly dehydrated, the apples did not give him enough water.
I would see if there is a vet anywhere near you who at least knows something about birds and schedule an appointment. I had to take mine to just a regular vet, but he knows about the avian side of the business (more dealing with parrots and such). He knew it was Mareks immediately by looking at my roo, although he said if we wanted to be 100% positive we would have to do a biopsy, which I declined. He also recommended that I kill off my other 3 and start new, because it is the only way to stop the cycle, which I am not going to do! I think mine were never vaccinated, but I am going to vaccinate them ASAP (got the vaccine on it's way from First State Vet Supply), and see if it takes. If it does great, if it doesn't, well that will be heartbreaking. In the meantime I can't get any new chicks. I wish we were closer because I would totally split the vaccine with you! Anyway, I have only had chickens for a few months now, and it was a pretty sad way to start. I have learned my lesson about being 100% sure that my babies are vaccinated as soon as they hatch.
Let us know how your chicken does, and btw my thoughts are with you!

-sigh- i have a flock of 74 chickens witih 33 chicks. (from hatchery so they must be vaccinated) but i have 8 chicks that i hatched... that will gain immunity to old fashioned way.......

crosses fingers -dont let my flock get whipped out)

The hatchery chicks will have only been vaccinated if you paid the extra fee for it. It is a add on and runs about 10 cents a bird. I am so sorry that you may loose this bird. I pray that its's not Marek's

On the subject of not getting notices, it's not BYC's fault. Very once in a while for what ever reason, the browsers on computers will decide that BYC notices are spam. This is probably about the time the browser does an upgrade or something. So if I don't have notices, I go looking in the junk mail folder and there they are.

Well the concrete pump just showed up, and now all we are waiting for is the concrete. DH is going to have me run the hose. I am praying that I can keep up with the boys. I have taken a wee bit extra in the the pain killer department so in about 20 minutes, I should be ready to work my tail off. Maybe it's time for some Ibuprofen also. I love to work when things don't hurt.
