Please note that the comments about the whiskey are not nor are they intended to reflect my feelings about drinking. It is only a statement about how my mothers daughter is allowing booze to control and ruin her life!!!

How sad for her. Addiction is such a difficult thing to overcome. Hopefully, sooner than later, she'll come to a point in life where she sees how much it is damaging her life. She would probably have to exchange a new addiction for the one she has. I might suggest a chicken addiction. They bring such a strange, calming effect to one's life.

Anything I should know about switching chicken food? I have been using the cheapest brand I could get my hands on of Purina/Nutrena grower, but today I decided spur of the moment to switch to flock raiser. It was $20 for a 50lb bag, but I've heard that since it has so much protein in it they will eat a bit less of it? Anyway, my question is whether or not I should switch cold turkey whenever their other feed runs out or if I should mix it in gradually, kinda like changing over a mammal's food, like cats and dogs? Thanks in advance!

I've had no issue with just switching.

I fear you've been mislead on the protein thing. Chickens will not eat less simply because the protein level is higher. That extra protein will just pass through their system. Flock raiser is great for mixed ages, game birds, turkeys, etc, but it is way more (5% or more) protein than laying birds need.

I don't think the exchange would work. That would mean she would have to spend time off the couch and away from the bottle to do something !!

I was simply exhausted last night. I forgot to close up the chicken run. Left the door wide open. Now I'm terrified to head outside and check on the girls. DH is gonna do it for me in a few minutes. I suck. And I'm gonna be so upset if anything happened. I know it's unlikely that I've never seen a single predator and on the single night in the last 5 months that I forgot to close the door one came by, but I'm still scared. Can't bring myself to go out there though.

Oh no. I hope, for your sake, nothing happened!

On the fence about if I want roos. With the running around the yard trying to get pictures of these new rescued chickens as they aren't human friendly as of yet they are really looking like 2 roos someone probably dumped on us. My hens are making alot more noise today, being very vocal. Only clucking like a hen out of the darkest one, think they are too nervous around our hens to crow this morning, I was listening for it. The one with markings seems to be less spooked. I like him. I will put up signs in the neighborhood but have a feeling they were dumped.

Ideas on breed?

So I went out to scoop the morning's poop. If I scoop it early in the morning, before they start rearranging their coop, all I have to scoop is 3 neat little piles. I discovered meal worms all over the coop mixed into the bedding. Then, I got to looking around. There are meal worms in the water bucket. Meal worms on the roof. Meal worms all over the ground around the coop.

Half the brand new bag is gone.

I just had a discussion with my daughter. She claims she didn't do it. She's blaming it on friends who were over last evening. Sigh! If only meal worms weren't so expensive. Now I get to try and rescue dried worms out of the water and see if the birds will still eat them.

Question.... how do you know if a breeder is a good breeder? I'm looking at buying eggs from someone on BYC. The eggs would come out of Tennessee. They are not cheap. He says his flock is a show winning flock. And, he's willing to send me fewer eggs than he has on his listing so I can use one incubator for incubating and the other for hatching. He would send me 10 eggs with the hopes that at least 6 or 7 of them would make it all the way through the process and hatch. All I'm hoping is to get 2 pullets out of this. Any others would have to be sold.

I don't really know enough about Brahma's standards to tell if this guy's birds really are show quality. But, if it is true that Reber Ranch's chicks come from Privett, I know enough to know that the coloring of the rooster Privett shows on their website as their rooster is off. I think I may have gotten lucky with Drama that she's as pretty as she is.

Ooops... gotta go hush a bird up.... someone's honking loudly! Too early for that!!!

If they are selling through BYC there is a feedback area. Maybe you can check their feedback. If you know their name you might be able to check out their ebay feedback as well.

There have been threads about buyers unhappy with the eggs they have received (broken, scrambled, not fertile, didn't develop). The usual response is that the seller is not responsible, after the eggs leave their hands. They may replace eggs, but are not required to, and will probably expect the buyer to pay for the additional shipping.

Russ- sounds like he is willing to work with you.

Russ- Good luck if you try hatching.
