Quote: I am so sorry that happened!
I have two cats, one that is stand-offish and won't let you get near her unless she knows you and one who is very friendly if he gets used to you.
I tend to put my cats in our bedroom when kids or lots of people come over just so it doesn't cause any issues and so my cats don't get stressed out or out in a bad situation or worse, hurt. We have little kids that come over and I don't trust them!
I definitely don't think it's the cats fault and I think the mom should have been more watchful over her son, so maybe next time taking the cat out of that situation of having to protect its self would be good.(not being judgmental, just an idea)

I would worry more about my cats health anyway with what sounds like a kid who does not know how to be gentle.
Hindsight is 20/20 though and I think it will be fine. Just give her time to make sure her son is ok. You know how moms worry.

Towards end of sept start of oct I will start hatching again and should have some BBS Ameraucana eggs in the bator. I do have a list from others for requested birds.... So far I have about 5 people waiting for Blue Pullets but if your willing to go splash or blacks I normally have a few of each when they hatch.
Course the reason I have a waiting list on blues is due to My keeping them until old enough to see if I want them for my flock before selling them.

Still working on the color and lacing improvements but they all have been good conformations and nice rich blacks and smokey splashes! (I call them smokey cuz they are not quite blue, grey or white but all 3 mixed together) And I will only breed hens that lay blue eggs. So I wait until they start laying sometimes before I sell them....... that's a lot of growing time!
Do you have any pictures of your splash hens? How are their temperaments? I do like beards and blue eggs....

Thanks for that link! We have a screecher, goes A-L-L night long. Always thought it was a screech owl, but now I think it's a Barn Owl. The 3rd -5th sound links down on the barn owl page sounds exactly like our guy.

Now, that sound would be annoying. There's nothing cute about a barn owl screech at all!

My hens are Blue and Black, My rooster is Blue but as with all BBS you get splash as well as blues and blacks.
I currently have 2 splash chicks (sold) that are broody raised. They will come sit on your feet but don't handle very well yet but just need a little work and they will be fine for handling. My Rooster gets picked up every night and my hens get checked every night so they are fairly mellow about being handled, they come sit on my feet during feeding time, they come sit on my shovel if I'm digging something since they know I will let them get all the bugs at each shovel full.... It is very rare for any of my birds to be flighty or freaky. Main reason I think it is that way is just due to my handling them all the time and teaching them that people do not mean harm so they have no need to freak. Even my broody chicks have always come and gotten feed out of my hands as young as 3 days old.

I will try and get a photo of the 2 splashes before they go to their new home.

What are the signs a GHO has gotten to a chicken?

My next door neighbor lost his only chicken a few years ago (he had an illegal one at that time and, thankfully, no one turned him in). After his chicken disappeared, they found a feather trail that went over three back yards. Whatever took it jumped quite a few 6' fences.

that is most likely a canidae (dog, coyote, fox). GHO's will most likely carry the prey off to a safe place to eat it.

New coop project, phase 1!

My ex-BF stashed away these four large and two small pallets for us today from the shipping/receiving department where he works.

My BF was able to carry and fit all of them into his station wagon

, and we are going to pick up four more large and one more small tomorrow, supposedly in even better condition than the ones we got today! Then we'll design it on the camping trip next week (weather and finances permitting

), and get to work ASAP!

Does anyone have any words of wisdom for first-time coop DIYers?!?
