I have a question on chicks. There are two feed stores that are getting in chicks this weekend: Reber Ranch and Monroe Farm and Feed. Monroe F&F is getting them in tomorrow and I'll be in the area anyway, so I'm thinking of stopping by, picking up all the supplies I need and taking a look at the chicks. If I get chicks from MF&F and also get some from RR, do I raise them in separate brooders, or put them together? Do I quarantine them like I would if I added older birds together? I might be getting two of the breeds that I want from breeders as well. For those I assume I keep them separate. Is 30 days enough? Will it work to raise every up (and quarantine as necessary) and then add them to the new coop and run together since it will be new territory for all of them?

If you get them the same day, you can raise them together. We did this. I got 8 from Reber Ranch and 8 from Seattle Farm Supply. I even got a few more later that were 2 weeks younger. Just tossed them in with everyone else.

KMHunter- the first time I shot a gun I wasn't yet 2 years old! My dad took me and a cousin, laid us down in the back of his truck bed, propped up the gun on a pillow, and we shot at squirrels (and killed a bunch!) ion a field that day. I grew up around guns, knives, hunting, animals, and "dangerous" stuff but even at 2 I had common sense not to touch guns unsupervised. My dad woulda killed me if the gun hadn't! LOL it's a different world now and I feel like my kid are missing out :(

We have guns, but they have gun locks and ammunition is stored separately.  We have bows - again out of the reach of the kids.  We have a BB gun, but the kids must be supervised while using it.  All three of my kids have pocket knives, but they are supervised when whittling.  My oldest has earned his whittling chip through Cub Scouts and has been allowed to carry a pocket knife with him to Den meetings for over a year.  My 10-year-old has shot paint ball guns, archery, and has thrown hatchets (a large ax thrown at a stump).  I may be a safety-freak, but my kids are not missing out at all.  They are taught safety skills, supervised carefully, and are taught to respect the tool whatever it may be (whether it is a weapon or a power tool).  My children have been using a Dremel tool for a few years, as well.

I grew up with a bear/deer/elk/moose hunter.  The man was crazy enough to hunt bear with a long bow that he built himself - and he got 3.  Thank heavens he followed the bow up with a .44.  We had guns, compound bows, long bows - you name it, we probably had it.  When I was a kid I used to have to help my step-dad clean his black powder rifle.  And my "special" job was pulling all the guns out from underneath the house when he wanted them.  Blech!

I'm not against any of these things.  I am extremely safety conscious and drive respect for weapons/tools into my children's little brains.  One slight mis-step and you can have a major accident or a death.  My step-dad was a carpenter for 50 years before he accidentally cut 3 of his fingers off with a table saw.  Going to the hospital with him that day was devastating.  I've experienced life, and have seen accidents happen.  My children are young, and as their parent, it is my responsibility to teach them instead of leaving it up to chance that they will have common sense at a young age.

I think it is very good to teach children respect for all of those things and still let them have the experience. It's nice when they get to an age and trust level that you don't have to be there watching every second. I get most worried when there are a group of kids doing stupid stuff. I don't let them get any of those things out when there are other kids around. That is not a risk I am willing to take.

Hi guys ! Well most of you know I ripped the quadracepts & all ligaments in the nasty left knee AGAIN....3 times now. So, I have been laid up but still doing the bank paperwork and today I am almost ready...still need to get 2 blueprint copies, 2 mo bank statements and a few other do-bies to submit to the bank. But building HIGH estimate seems to be $65K..not a bad mortgage at all. That will be what we must qualify for, and then what we actually use to finish the house will be what is financed & become our mortgage. Hope you are all doing great !!! :frow
I feel your pain the doctor thinks I tore the cart on the inside of my right knee. I see the ortho doctor on the 14. It was my good knee the other was hurt in the marines.

They would be one day apart. I'm not going to get a ton of them if I get any. I am betting they will have straight run, so I would get 2-3 of each kind that I want, and they will likely only have Wyandotte and Polish. I haven't been able to find a list of what they are getting.

While John isn't supervised with his pocket knife, there's a couple rules. He doesn't get it out unless it's only our other neighbor boy around who also has a knife or he's alone. Guess I just don't care all that much about specific instruction unless it's guns. Knives: here ya go kid; don't point it at anyone. Whittle away from yourself and others. Close it before you walk. Don't leave it anywhere. See ya have fun! We've had very few reminders on those "rules" and he's only 6 but has had it for 2 years. He actually has 2 and there's usually one in each pocket. Good thing we homeschool or I just KNOW he'd be the one in the principal's office getting expelled for bringing a freaking "deadly weapon" to school.

And yeah...he climbs all the neighborhood trees and rides his bike up and down our street. One neighbor said "You're not going to sue me if he falls outta my tree and breaks his arm are you?" LOL I told him that's ridiculous and if my kid gets hurt it's our fault, not his. I guess if we ever went anywhere else with his bike he'd need a helmet just so we didn't get cited or something lame. All I know is that when I was a kid, I learned with no helmet and rode for many years without one; the very same day my parents bought me a helmet because it was now CA state law that all 0-18y/o's had to wear them, I never rode my bike again.

OK off to check for eggs. The girls are a bit slow today. Only 4 at noon when I checked, but Tilda was sitting in the box. She takes forever!! And what's with them all panting like it's 100 degrees out while they lay eggs? It that just part of the "labor" of laying an egg?

I also received notice from Wilco that they will be selling fall chicks and having chicken raising workshops at their various stores.
The workshop at the Gig Harbor store is September 18th.

I don't know if King and or Pierce county has a similar event, but up here in Snohomish County, we have a 4-H Open House if you will, later this month. It's the perfect oppurtunity for you to check out the projects you are interested in, as well as local 4-H clubs.

Here's the info on the one up here:

"Snohomish County My-4H event, September 27, 2012, at 7:00 at the Evergreen Fairgrounds (Monroe) Beef Pavillion. All 4-H clubs and projects will be represented and everything you need to know to start the new 4-H year, which starts October 1, will be presented."

A couple of pointers to be aware of if you are new to the 4-H thing. First, there are Clubs. Some of the clubs are single project clubs, meaning they might only have a dog project. So all the club members do dogs. Other clubs are multi-project clubs, and might offer a poultry project, sewing project, dog project, model trains project, etc. The kids can elect to participate in only one project or do them all! So think about your kids interests before you sign up with one!

Different clubs/projects have different requirements in order for the kids to show at fair. Up here, the Poultry Project really has no strict requirements for you to show at fair, other than that you own any birds you are showing at fair for 60+ days, and you must do an Educational Poster to show. Our club, on the other hand, has strict requirements such as you can only miss 3 Business Meetings a year, you must participate in 4 community service events over the course of the year, you must do a Public Presentation in the spring AND you must keep up on your yearly and permanent record books. So make sure to not only find out when the Club meetings are and the Project meetings are, but also what the club/project requirements are, and make sure that you are ok with them before you really get going. And ask for a family who has been doing it awhile to mentor your family, once you get into a project so things like Record Books aren't so overwhelming to you at the start, if you have to keep them.

If you can't find a club or project in your area that interests you, don't hesitate to start one of your own! It's really not difficult and your extension office can help you out with all that you need to know.
HTH!

If we can't find one, maybe we can form one. I'm in Auburn. I see you are close by. I have three kids (10, 8, and 8) that I want to have in 4-H.
I do believe each member has to live in the same county though, could be wrong. Lake Tapps & Auburn are close but I'm in Pierce county. We'll have to see.

Do they have a list of what they are getting? I heard back from Monroe and they are only getting Ameraucanas, black sex link, barred rocks and RIR.
