Quote: I feel the same way. I don't provide any supplemental light. I just go with what I have, but then again my family doesn't eat 3.5 doz eggs per week either. That's alot of eggs, your girls better get busy!

That's why I got a big coop and BIG run. DH thinks I went overboard...little does he know that our 11 girls might not even provide enough eggs through the winter! Doh!

Thank you everyone who responded about lighting! WOW, I will most definitely be using lighting. I have electrical run to the coop, I have a light in there, I have a timer on the outlet, so this is a no brainer. Do most of you provide it in the morning or at night? Because my worry is that I would have to have the light come on at 2:30am in December just to get the bare minimum of 14 hours of daylight!

Also, would it be good to run some lights in the chicken run too, since that's where they spend most of their time? I was thinking LED outdoor christmas strands all the way around the top of the inside of the roofed run. WDYT?
I did that one year. I had lights in the coop and out in the run, but only in the morning. It worked great! I think I also put some sort of flood light out in the run too now that I think about it, becaus the x-mas lights weren't bright enough.

OH, and a funny way to look at our diet in our home (for many reasons, food allergies, health issues, animal rights issues, etc) is that we are Vegans, plus fish and chicken (meat, eggs); occasionally we have beef if I know it is coming from a humane place that allows their cows to range and live naturally and were killed humanely, yada yada. Most people have no idea how to feed us

Poor Renee the other day was looking all over her kitchen going ...um...um...can they have Goldfish crackers? Nope, sorry. Crackers? Nope, sorry....got any fruit? Oooh, OK, I'll cut them up some fruit. How about nuggets? OK, we can have them occasionally. Hah! It was probably terrible for her, but I thought it was entertaining because for us it's just old hat now, but most people can't feed us! And don't worry Renee, we all went home with full tummies and had a great time

We will have to compare notes over the winter months.
I too have 11 hens (10 standard and I banty). Six are over a year old and the others are new layers.
Last month I averaged 8 eggs/day.

Definitely! PM me sometime and we'll compare. Though right now I only have 9 at POL, 7-8 of them already laying. I average 6 eggs a day and they are 23 weeks old. The other two are only 14 weeks old and might not lay at all this fall/winter. Hoping that's not the case!
