OK please forgive me but this was sent to me in an e-mail and thought it worth sharing.
This is great! Be sure to always do what your Mama told you about clean underwear!!!
After the last few days of tension and uncertainty,

This is clean and hilarious!
Not a single dirty word!! Hilarious--Mark Lowery at his best!

question~ since I am a new chicken owner, less than a month...
Do you all let your chickens free range in the rain? Do they have a problem with being wet? I mean I always leave the cage open so they can go in whenever they want, but are there any issues with letting them freerange in the wet? Do they catch colds or anything like that?

I let mine out for a little while. They don't seem to mind as long as it's not pouring. I don't think they get sick from being wet. But mine get out of the rain when they are tired of it.

Quote: Yeah x2, Mine will go out in the rain, but if it really pours they get under shelter.

During the summer, they will not voluntarily stay under the sprinkler. and the hose is an EVIL chicken torture device.

Chickens do not get colds like people, but there are other respiratory issues that look a lot like colds, to us people.

Had a really good road trip to Yacoult WA today with SadieSue. Went to see Karen Larsen of Catdance silkies. Got a lot of info about raising and breeding silkies.
Long Drive, 3.5 hours, but so worth it!
CR, if we had had time I would have tried to come see you too!
Thank you Dana for coming! It was fun!

I hope your new little girl fits in well with the others.

Thank you for letting me invite myself to tag along Kim! Here's a helpful hint - if you think you might enjoy the company of another BYC'er, go on a road trip with them! They'll be trapped in a car with you for a few hours and you may find that the conversation just flows...

I had a great time. It was a beautiful day for a long drive, Karen's place was really cool, and it was interesting to see how a serious breeder of one breed operates. So many pens full of fluffy Silkies, and such a variety of colors! Karen was very gracious, helpful and informative. And I did actually get to bring home a sweet little Silkie girl. A white/paint girl who some are referring to as "creamsicle." She's residing in the bunny cage in my computer room for a few weeks until I get rid of my boys and integrate her with her sweet silkie sisters in the VF coop.

Sorry CR - the trip there and back took quite a bit of time and Karen was nice enough to let us spend a good amount of time at her place.

Thanks again Kim - that was a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The visit to Catdance was wonderful but best of all was getting to visit with you.

JennS was it you that wanted to see the Splash AM's? I did post photos... dunno if the people who wanted to see them saw it...

Maybe? I can't remember. This past week or so is a blur with all that's been going on, and I've barely started my coffee this morning. (My son let me sleep in, yay!)

If it was me, thank you for posting them! I'm sorry I kept you waiting. I have finally worked out most of the birds I am getting. I couldn't find a Polish, so I am going with lavender Orpingtons instead. I hope I have a good hatch rate.

Ok...is it weird that I am terrified of spiders in general. Mainly the ones with bodies between 1/8 inch or larger. EXCEPT......Tarantulas.

I see them differently and I don't know why.
I am crazy, I know it.

One of my friends is the same way. She is just fine being around my tarantulas, but if she sees a little house or garden spider it freaks her out.

I have been told that chickens don't catch colds! I am not positive about that but am sure one of our many VERY knowledgeable can answer. As for getting wet. Well my outlook is I provide them with shelter from the rain. IF they CHOOSE not to use it that is up to them.
One thing we all need to remember is that chickens have been around for many many years and have survived ok without nice warm heated coops etc. That is part of why I don't get too excited about heat etc. I believe in survival of the fittest!!!

It looks like it might rain today, but I have the feeling the weather is just taunting me. I'm getting tired of having to water all my pots, and the sun has been *roasting* my living room. I could do with some overcast days and the sound of raindrops on the roof.

After seeing chicks running around on frozen ground, happy as can be and only running under their mom every now and then, I'm not to worried about chickens and the cold we get here.

As for rain, some of mine don't like any of it and head for shelter as soon as they feel it. Others wait until it's downpour before heading in, and only reluctantly then. The brahmas I got last year were half duck, I swear. Standing in belly deep water, grazing on the grass and any bugs they could scratch up from the bottom. I bet those feathered feat help them paddle.

I have plenty of covered space for them to play in. They seem to like just laying down and watching the rain. Well my chickens are lazy and just lounge around a lot anyway. Then they go out in groups to find goodies.
