Quote: Hope you meant straw as hay will be terrible come spring due to the weed seeds it usally carries. I've heard if you use hay in the second or third cutting you get less but I don't know that for a fact as I don't want to risk it.
I've had OK success using dirt about 8 inches then as the plant grows placing straw on top so digging isn't so hard and then the straw can begin it's break down process for another raised bed.
If I have extra dirt sometimes do a layer of straw then sprinkle dirt in it. All I know is the slugs love that stuff. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
This year I did it that way with one big square area. After digging them all up I placed the straw dirt mixture on a tarp and will use that for my buckets next year.
Since it's in a hill type of pile I'm hoping the straw composes faster. Straw takes quite a while but I like it for my raised beds and for mositure retention.

Quote: I think it would be just a little to heavy and I think I would have to lean a little too far for comfort to get it closed. I'm pretty good at trying to lift to much and twisting ever so slightly while lifting and throwing my back out. If it is possible to keep it water tight I would rather have just the front lift up.

You're lucky I didn't see this until now, or I probably would have taken you up on it! I was hurting really bad. The headache got worse after I posted. I did end up in tears. DH and the kids jumped into action and got the craft project prepared for me and helped me get the bikes and things into the car. I tried everything we could think of to get the headache to ease. I drank three glasses of orange juice, took a vitamin C, ate a banana, ate some salted pretzels, took 2 Tylenol and laid down for an hour and a half. Thankfully, it eased some. I still had a headache at the meeting, but not so bad that I couldn't stand up like it had been.

We did a bike safety night, and talked about our Webelos boy who was hit by the car. This was our first Den meeting after summer and many of the kids had no idea he had been hit. Some of them did, and they were able to express their thoughts about it. We played games and learned the bike hand signals, how to read stop and yield signs, traffic lights, pedestrian lights, etc. They learned about helmets and where they could get them for free if they couldn't afford them. They learned how to pump up tires, got to practice pumping them up, and they learned how to tighten bolts on the bikes. Plus, we were able to send one of our older bikes home with a boy who did not have one. He was pretty excited.

So, despite the headache, it was a really good evening. The boys said they had fun, and that's what it's all about.

Have you tried turmeric? It works wonders for pain relief

I've recently seen an article where folks are growing potatoes in their feed bags. Rolling the top of the bag down a bit, filling with dirt - I'm not a gardener so I have no idea if that would work well or not, but it seemed a cool re-use of an old feed bag.

Yes, I meant straw. Oooops! I always seem to mix those two words up.

I had the best success growing potatoes, in dirt, in those huge pots that trees come in. I snagged some off the side of the road one year during our city's spring clean-up. I start out with a little bit of dirt on the bottom, then add more dirt through the season as the potato plants grow. In past years, they have grown very well that way. At the end of the season, I pour the dirt out on a tarp, pull out my potatoes, and dig the dirt into a a flower bed so it doesn't accidentally get used again for growing potatoes or tomatoes in the future. The nice part about this system is you can drag the pots to where they can get the most sun in the yard. In a particularly cool or wet summer, they can moved into the brightest light possible or under a greenhouse to help prevent blight from being spread by too much rain.

That's a great idea! And that would be cute, too! I like the look of feed bags - they kind of remind of those old signs. I may be a little odd though.

Too many roosters!

I just hatched another one yesterday. I have decided to sell my Lemon Cuckoo Orpington and Blue Copper Marans cockerels. I have them listed on Craigslist but if anyone from this Forum would like them, let me know and you can have them.

My Lemon Cuckoo Orp is very sweet and friendly. When he was younger, he would wait in the evening after all the other chickens went to bed for me to put him in the coop. He lets me pet him and pick him up. I would like to find him a good pet home. He is from Jordan Farms in Georgia and Green Fire stock. I had him shipped with my cream legbars and chicks.

The Blue Copper Marans is a bit spunkier but I can pick him up and handle him, he is very interested in the hens and not aggressive toward us at all. I can't even touch his father. He will be a great flock protector. We hatched him from our own chickens.

I don't know if they are true migraines or not. I'm not exactly sure what a true migraine is. They come on very fast. I know one is coming on within an hour of getting it. I have to get into the dark. I feel like I'm going to

. I can't handle noise. At it's worst, my head hurts so bad I can't hold back the tears. Thankfully, my kids, who are typically very loud, know that if Mommy has a headache, they have to be quiet.

When the headaches hit, I try everything thinking it must be an imbalance of something I'm missing in my diet. That's why I drank a bunch of orange juice, ate a banana, popped a Vitamin C, ate some salt, and took Tylenol. We're just guessing. We don't have a clue what helps them.

Last night was probably the toughest night ever at Cub Scouts to smile and be cheerful through. I walked into the noise of all those boys, and my head felt like it was going to explode. It was a very long hour and a half! But, I got through it! Yay!

As for my Webelos boy from last year, he is alive. At this point, he can not walk. They are still waiting to find out if he will have facial repair surgery. I think there might be a cost factor involved with that, as well. I'm not positive. It sounds like things are still pretty up in the air as to what the family will decide they are able to do.

I totally understand the difficult situation they are in. To this day I have a back deformity from when I was hit on a bike at the age of 6. I grew up on welfare, and was not given the opportunity to have a back brace or raised shoe to repair the problem (I lost about 1" out of my femur). When I was 18, I went in to see if they could do anything to fix it, I was told it was too late. I hope something like that doesn't happen to this little boy.

That sounds absolutely horrible!! I don't know anything about migranes either, but I'd say, if there is such a thing, that's definitely what you are dealing with. I had a friend growing up that would get them and she had all the same symptoms that you do. It was awful! I'm sorry you have to endure that kind of thing.

As far as the little boy, does his family have some kind of website set up for people to help with the cost of his medical bills? Maybe you could post it here if they do? I couldn't imagine as a parent not being able to get my child the help needed b/c of money, that would be the worst feeling ever. My family and I will include him and his family in our prayers. It seems right now that our prayers are getting longer and longer every day b/c I keep learning of different families who need them, it's so sad. Thank goodness the power of prayer is amazing!
