I've had OK success using dirt about 8 inches then as the plant grows placing straw on top so digging isn't so hard and then the straw can begin it's break down process for another raised bed.
If I have extra dirt sometimes do a layer of straw then sprinkle dirt in it. All I know is the slugs love that stuff. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
This year I did it that way with one big square area. After digging them all up I placed the straw dirt mixture on a tarp and will use that for my buckets next year.
Since it's in a hill type of pile I'm hoping the straw composes faster. Straw takes quite a while but I like it for my raised beds and for mositure retention.
