OK here is where I must also give my little pitch. For your heat lamp PLEASE buy a light fixture that has a PORCELAIN base NOT PLASTIC ! ! ! ! See the plastic ones are not made to take the high temps and WILL melt over time possibly causing FIRE.Make sure that the light fixture has a label attached that says it is rated for the size bulb you will use (probably 250watt).

We have basic metal hanging lamps with the red heat bulbs
 
This also works well for a brooder. Especially if yer a quacker head. :lau

We like to be extra sure on here....we know of someone who had a fire from a lamp burn down their barn :(
Yes that is the kind and YES it was my friend / former feed supplier who lost her entire barn, all her breeding hogs and feed business to a fire and as near as we could tell it was from a failed heat lamp.
