FYI with the talk of auto doors and having to go out in the dark to lock up. I use the cheap easy solution. I DO NOT lock my birds up at night. That way they can go out as early as they like and go to bed when they want!!! But that is just my way!!!!
The similarities between CR and myself are astounding. I swear we must be long lost brothers.

My birds have an open door to come and go as they please.
Me too... LOL Im always shy about telling people I dont lock up my laying flocks.... They have an open door to run to go out anytime they choose. Ive been told that Im just waiting for disaster , But Im going on 3 years and never an incident.. I do have an electric fencing wire around my newer run and both and Both are pretty barried along edges.... We do have predators here. We see Racoons and coyotes several times a week. Last week we saw a black bear..just up the road...BUT... we also have 5 very large dogs that patrol the property. One little dog that thinks he is the size of an elephant. So usually if anything is about outside we know about it. Also the entire perimeter of the property is fenced for our cattle.

LOL well just in the spirit of fairness.... There are several gun toting men around here... There is a small graveyard on the back corner of the property for ALL predators :) Heheee.. Also I am really handy with a pitchfork... Some day I ll tell ya the story of Me in my jammies and flip flops.... a young back bear and 4 little piglets we were raising... There was a pitchfork, squealing, and in the end the bear had more holes when he left than when he came :) LOL

Shock findings in new GMO study: Rats fed lifetime of GM corn grow horrifying tumors, 70% of females die early
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

(NaturalNews) Eating genetically modified corn (GM corn) and consuming trace levels of Monsanto's Roundup chemical fertilizer caused rats to develop horrifying tumors, widespread organ damage, and premature death. That's the conclusion of a shocking new study that looked at the long-term effects of consuming Monsanto's genetically modified corn.

The study has been deemed "the most thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup on rats." News of the horrifying findings is spreading like wildfire across the internet, with even the mainstream media seemingly in shock over the photos of rats with multiple grotesque tumors... tumors so large the rats even had difficulty breathing in some cases. GMOs may be the new thalidomide.

"Monsanto Roundup weedkiller and GM maize implicated in 'shocking' new cancer study" wrote The Grocery, a popular UK publication. (http://www.thegrocer.co.uk/topics/technology-and-supply-chain/monsant...)

It reported, "Scientists found that rats exposed to even the smallest amounts, developed mammary tumors and severe liver and kidney damage as early as four months in males, and seven months for females."

The Daily Mail reported, "Fresh row over GM foods as French study claims rats fed the controversial crops suffered tumors." (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2205509/Fresh-fears-GM...)

It goes on to say: "The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as severe liver and kidney damage. The researchers said 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group."

The study, led by Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen, was the first ever study to examine the long-term (lifetime) effects of eating GMOs. You may find yourself thinking it is absolutely astonishing that no such studies were ever conducted before GM corn was approved for widespread use by the USDA and FDA, but such is the power of corporate lobbying and corporate greed.

The study was published in The Food & Chemical Toxicology Journal and was just presented at a news conference in London.

Findings from the study

Here are some of the shocking findings from the study:

• Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature death.

• Rats that drank trace amounts of Roundup (at levels legally allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large tumors.

• Rats fed GM corn and traces of Roundup suffered severe organ damage including liver damage and kidney damage.

• The study fed these rats NK603, the Monsanto variety of GM corn that's grown across North America and widely fed to animals and humans. This is the same corn that's in your corn-based breakfast cereal, corn tortillas and corn snack chips.

The Daily Mail is reporting on some of the reaction to the findings:

France's Jose Bove, vice-chairman of the European Parliament's commission for agriculture and known as a fierce opponent of GM, called for an immediate suspension of all EU cultivation and import authorisations of GM crops. 'This study finally shows we are right and that it is urgent to quickly review all GMO evaluation processes,' he said in a statement. 'National and European food security agencies must carry out new studies financed by public funding to guarantee healthy food for European consumers.' Read the study abstract

The study is entitled, "A Comparison of the Effects of Three GM Corn Varieties on Mammalian Health." Read the abstract here:
http://www.biolsci.org/v05p0706.htm

That abstract include this text. Note: "hepatorenal toxicity" means toxic to the liver.

Our analysis clearly reveals for the 3 GMOs new side effects linked with GM maize consumption, which were sex- and often dose-dependent. Effects were mostly associated with the kidney and liver, the dietary detoxifying organs, although different between the 3 GMOs. Other effects were also noticed in the heart, adrenal glands, spleen and haematopoietic system. We conclude that these data highlight signs of hepatorenal toxicity, possibly due to the new pesticides specific to each GM corn. In addition, unintended direct or indirect metabolic consequences of the genetic modification cannot be excluded.

Here are some quotes from the researchers:

"This research shows an extraordinary number of tumors developing earlier and more aggressively - particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts." - Dr Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist, King's College London.

"We can expect that the consumption of GM maize and the herbicide Roundup, impacts seriously on human health." - Dr Antoniou.

"This is the first time that a long-term animal feeding trial has examined the impact of feeding GM corn or the herbicide Roundup, or a combination of both and the results are extremely serious. In the male rats, there was liver and kidney disorders, including tumors and even more worryingly, in the female rats, there were mammary tumors at a level which is extremely concerning; up to 80 percent of the female rats had mammary tumors by the end of the trial." - Patrick Holden, Director, Sustainable Food Trust.

I also don't lock my girls in the coop. I close and latch the run door after dark. They are always on their roost b4 sundown. They don't even bother to use the ramp walk up any more. they fly up to their roost, jockey for position and go to sleep. Amazes me that they are so punctual and so little fuss when on the roost.

My girls really enjoy corn on the cob and the cob too! But they really slow down in the egg department for the next two or three days.

My setup has a little bit of both. They can go in and out of the coop any time into a very secure pen. Then there's another little door that, when unlocked and opened, let's them out into a large play area. The little door gets locked about dusk after they're inside the secure pen. If I'm going to be gone overnight (or several days) they just stay locked in, no problem.

That's extremely scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! POOR RATS!! Good grief, I know I'm gonna have to go back to eating gluten-free due to health issues but now corn, and probably soy, free? I know there's a couple people on here that have very restricted diets and I ask you how do you do it? Just GF was hard to get on board with. I always felt kinda outcast when going out to eat with friends. How do you do it without spending a fortune???

Well, I'm new to this whole chicken thing so I'm not that brave yet. None of our property is fenced, other then the chicken yard, but the top is open, not covered. We have dogs but they are indoor dogs so there's no patrolling the property here when predators are actually out and about. I know we have coyotes, bob cats, all types of birds of prey and who knows what else. We've only been in our house since June, so we aren't really sure what else we have. I know our neighbors don't lock theirs up though so I'm pretty sure ours are pretty safe, I figure the predators will go for the easy meal (our neighbors chickens) over ours. Lol

Our little boy was awfully darned surprised when they showed up. He had not seen another chick before. He seems pretty thrilled with them. I wonder what my daughter will think.

Aww, this is so sweet. I love it.

Here's mine. If you look at the 2x4s attached to the side walls you'll see that they are notched for roosts on two levels. Sometimes I leave the girls on the bottom level without a poop board but most of the time I have the roost on the top as shown and use a poop board with a sheet of vinyl resting on the lower wall 2x4s. I ran the lower 2x4s all the way to the front so that I can slide the poop board closer to me for cleaning. I did not attach the vinyl to the board. This way it's easy to take out and hose off or replace as needed.

I also put down a piece of vinyl on the floor and ran it up the back. It is only attached at the back. This makes it easy to lift and clean when I hose the whole coop down. (There are very small drain holes in the marine plywood base under the vinyl.)

The nest boxes are painted dark and are below the roosts so that the girls don't sleep in them. It might be hard to see but the lip in front of the nest boxes is actually about 1 inch away from the nest boxes. In other words, I left a gap big enough for me to sweep out the nest box into the main coop but not so big that eggs would roll out into the main coop. (I hope that makes sense.)

And, since I'm so chatty tonight, here's a photo of my feeder. My goal was to have it under the coop so that the girls couldn't sit on top of it. At the same time, I did not want to have to go into the run (and get my shoes dirty) just to refill the feeder. The fix was to use kitchen drawer slider thingies and attach them to a board from which the feeder hangs. Love love love my slide out feeder.

Wow, wow and wow!! You have the set up! This looks really nice! I love seeing all the pics of everyone else's coops. I love the creativity and attention to detail! I love all the ideas I'm getting too. Thanks so much for sharing!!

I have to do GF as well. It is very hard to do. You have to be committed and disciplined. I have failed a few times myself but I am back on track now, for the 3rd time, and there will be no more giving in...I'm tired of being sick.
I know exactly what you mean about eating with friends. I almost feel guilty because I feel like I'm more high maintenance and I hate that my friends have to cater to that when we eat at their houses. Luckily, we've been blessed with great friends and they don't seem to mind one bit, but I still feel bad. Tomorrow night we are going to a friends daughters b day party. They are going to order pizza and have cake and ice cream, well I can't eat the pizza or the cake (and I looove pizza and cake so this is gonna be hard). I found a recipe online for cauliflower pizza crust, I'm soo gonna make my own little pizza to take with me, that's the only way I will be able to get through it w/out eating badly.
But ya, I'm with ya, it's hard and it can get pretty pricey.
