My kids just got to watch a super wiggly 6-day-old chick embryo. Pretty cool! We can see the embryo in the white egg, but we can't see much in the brown and olive eggs.

I finally got a diagnosis for why I am having much pain and stiffness in my hips. I may explain most of the pain issues besides. I seem to have a form of arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis. So far what I have learned is that I am not going to have any fun with it, and I will not get any better over time. Still it is a relief to know that it is real, and not just in my head. I have spent way too many years being told, and thinking that I am somehow making up the pain. At least now I can know that there is a real reason for the pain.

Dang. I'm sorry, but I'm also glad you got a diagnosis. That at least does give some mental relief.

OMG! I just saw all the quilts. I'm drooling and jealous. They are all so awesome.

I have lots of fabric that mom gave me. I should try and make a quilt. It won't be as good, but I figure if I keep it up, over time I might get good at making them.

Loving all the quilts too!

I'm a fairly new quilter, only have made a few small one's so far. I get my craft on when the weather turns foul, and I already have the itch, but can't bear to pull myself out of the garden yet!!!

I copied Chickielady's idea today of putting seeds in the dehydrator. I put in a TON of Rudbeckia, and after looking online I think it is the Goldsturm variety. Also a TON of Crocosmia Lucifer. Let me know if anyone wants any of them, or, someone fill me in on the seed swap?

I seem to recall one here late last winter? Or was that just veggies? I want in on it this year though either way!!!

I'm especially looking for more blue/purple perennials......if anybody has some they want to trade for the above plants, let me know!

I have another broody again, too. The other silkie girl that has been laying so well with 6 eggs a week decided she's done and wants to hatch them. I'm taking the dog house she's been laying in, and tried to sit all day, out tomorrow. I'll try to just discourage her first. Then I'll stick her in a cage if needed. I filed her nails this evening since she hates that so much. I may bring her in to play pet. She doesn't like that either.

Well the baby (can you tell I'm having a hard time letting go? He's 2.5

Sounds like a young pullet going broody to me.

I dont think you can OD them on bugs :)
That's good, 'cause we had friends over tonight and we spent a long time playing with the chicks. They just go nuts for mealworms. Now if you stand by the brooder they run over and stare up at you, and if you reach down and wiggle your fingers they sometimes try to fly up to you. 2 weeks old, and they can get about a foot off the ground! The bigger one even flew horizontally over a foot and made a perfect landing on a broom handle. I'm going to have to order several thousand mealworms to jump start my colony to keep up with them. And boost production on my feeder roaches!

Thanks!

Jennifer

Since mealworms have a high fat content, you might want to limit them just a bit.

Good point! I should have remembered that, as it applies for lizards as well. Doh! They aren't getting a ton of them. I've given them worms 3 times today, I think. They get a good workout at the same time. The bigger one usually chases the littler one for her worm (I'm thinking of calling him Jerk, as in he'll be Jerk Chicken if he keeps it up), but sometimes she finishes first and she'll chase him around the brooder, too! A couple of times today they both grabbed the same worm and had a little tug of war. Hilarious! I'll be cutting back when the eggs hatch anyway. The new ones won't be able to eat them right away, and the older ones would probably steal them out of their beaks.

Today was day 18. I candled the eggs and found and removed 8 duds. I still have 4 LO, 5 BLRW, and 5 silkies. Sadly, the one BCM egg I was given is a dud. Tomorrow I'll take out the automatic turner and add a sponge in a tray of water to up the humidity. I hope they hatch!!!
