Here's a question from an impatient newbie...
My flock is 2 different ages, due to a dog attack in May.The 3 survivors of the attack were hatched in early March, and started laying in late July--Just short of 5 months. One's a barred rock, ones a wyandotte, and one is a buff orpington, and all are faithful layers. We get 3 eggs most days, 2 eggs others.![]()
My "little girls" haven't started laying yet. The light brahma is 6 months old, and the 2 EE's and the buckeye are just shy of 5 months. None are laying yet. I KNOW the brahmas start late, but I guess I wonder if the younger set will lay at all before spring. It's not a huge biggie, as we have more than enough eggs already, but I'm just curious about how these things work. Well, that and the fact that we're dying to see what color eggs the EE's will give us! Any ideas? (Other than "just be patient." Patience and I are NOT on speaking terms!)

I don't put out poison because I know both my chickens and my dogs eat rodents. Our GSD is obscessed with hunting down and killing the things. Apparently me just leaving out the 1 inch plastic mesh or the bird netting on the ground is as good as a trap for the voles. They are STUPID. I find dead ones caught up in stuff regularly. They can't really chew through stuff like rats. They can dig like champions though. I can't wait until the rains come back and some of those deep holes start filling with water. Those things like to eat the chicken food, but leave everything else alone.
Wow! You are right. I forgot the chickens even eat rodents at times. Stupid voles indeed! One of my Pomeranian dogs thinks she is the great huntress. She loves to track and kill voles. She acts much like a cat in this regard. Earlier this evening I was outdoors rinsing off some of Betsy's bowls to bring in to disinfect. I noticed a mole mound by the sidewalk had made a mess. I sprayed the dirt off and as the water ran it caused the dirt mound to vanish down a tunnel. LOL Your post reminded me of it. I was just telling DH I think it goes under the sidewalk and is going to cause big trouble for him to repair the damage. Never a dull moment with all these rodents ... not to mention the big rodents called deer.~Dee~![]()
My cat brought me one this morning. If he can't get inside, he kills them and leaves them on the stoop, but it we leave a window open he brings them in live and and plays with them, I think to prove how manly he is. This morning it was a shared experience, those buggers squeal loud enough to bring me out of a dead sleep...not what I wanted to wake up to after only a few hours in bed! Of course, the bugger ran under my dresser where we couldn't get him , so I pulled out my secret weapon...my ferret Akiko could fit, and she's a much more efficient hunter than the cats.Quote:I thought they ate bulbs & root vegies too...like radishes or beets, daffodill bulbs ?
They are fun to run over with the riding mower too !
They cannot run very fast or near fast enough.
DH stomps them.....yuck, I cannot stand the crunch !
They do. They come in and will eat the pellets, though. We have a lot of them out by the edge of the pond. Little tunels through the grass down to the water. We have quite a few acres with grass marsh here. Normally the hawks go for them and not for the chickens. And yes, I've ran over many a vole while mowing. Don't usually see the suckers until I'm coming back for another pass and it's lying in the previous path twitching.
I'd had them all cleaned out from near the coops, but we went down to visit family a few weeks ago and had food down for the chickens the whole time. After it's up for a few weeks at night, they head on back out into the grass since no easy food.
I have pits out in the grass I have to watch out for where the dogs have dug them out. Our GSD is so pleased with herself when she gets them. Has to bring them in to show me. The chickens have gotten smart to her digging as well, there are always things in the dirt. She turns up nests occasionally and the chickens have a party. They have no qualms about taking stuff out of the dog's mouth and because she's so good tempered, she lets them.
Well, the Building Inspector just left.
he is a super nice guy !!!
Very educational, and spent alot of time explaining what we need to do & where, what types of Hurricane ties we need, etc.
he was very impressed with our framing job, and said we have done alot that was not necessary, extra blocking & extra large headers, etc.
So, we passed with flying colors !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote:They did but a lot of places got rid of them for some STUPID reason. If you have ever been to the Maltby Cafe, (In Maltby, Snohomish county) there is a small street corner clock in the parking lot/driveway and that one was also built by Jimmy Collier.I thought Seattle use to have those when I was a kid downtown.
Wish I had the $$$$$$$$$.
Love that clock.
I have two other clocks built by him, one is a grandfather clock (not for sale) and another huge street clock (also not for sale). Let me see if I have a pic of the other street clock......
Well I can't find one durring the day so you can see the details but this is one of my favorite pics.
This one you can see both clocks, as if you had just come in our drive way.
Gorgeous photos!!!
gorgeous photos x2!
Thank you very much. I love taking pictures, my DH bought me a 1 terabite external hard drive because I take at least 1000 pics every other day!
Quote: I agree, I will be contacting them tomorrow to see if they even want it and then I will go from there.Lets hope they do want it!![]()
A few months ago, my mom ran into the house and yelled for me to get the dead baby shrew my golden sexlink was trying to eat. She was horrified, but I couldn't help but laugh. It's true, deer are giant pests. They have been nibbling on our young Honeycrisp apple tree.Wow! You are right. I forgot the chickens even eat rodents at times. Stupid voles indeed!
