Hey! I'm winning that tractor!

When I first read this post about tractors I thought you meant TRACTOR...like John Deere, or.... I don't know...another brand...but ya' know, big tires, noisy and loud....vroom-vroom type tractor. I'm sorry. I am slow, I have 2 teenage boys that I have to run clear around the county 2 or 3x a week....by brain is slowly being sucked dry. (oh and for a small tidbit of information - Okanogan County is the largest county in the state of WA - just thought I would throw that out there).

I think I will go get another glass of wine.

If my chickens see a large bird they completely disappear, like totally disappear. Disguise the coop, pick up their poop, grab the cats and are just gone. The silence is eerie. Usually under the deck. They must have xray vision and can see through the deck, because they don't come back out till the raptors are long gone. I have lots of shrubs as well.
It's no certainty that they will be safe, but places to hide are a good thing.

It would be a slim chance that your cat would be a danger to full grown LF. My hens run ferals, strays, and pet cats off their food. It is occasionally posted that a cat attacked, but rare that it was witnessed.

Thought I was going to have to eat my words.
Last night my RIR didn't go to bed at dark like usual. The only odd thing, in the yard, was 2 of the chairs on the deck were knocked over. The only predator I've ever seen in the afternoon/evening was Eagles flying over, so I was thinking one managed to grab one on the deck. I just have a yard so I searched by flashlight, every tree, bush, bldg and square inch of the yard, and then the neighbors as well. No sign of her. Went to bed with a heavy heart. The only glimmer of hope was that the remaining 3 were not freaked. I have a family of raccoons that terrorize my pond almost every night, so I was worried that even if an eagle hadn't got her that they would or the new little possum that comes to clean out the cat dishes. Although neither the raccoons or possum have ever shown any interest in the chickens.
Well she showed back up this morning gloating to the others that she did not have to wait for me to open the gate.
She likes to sit on eggs, but is not broody, so tonight I'll be spying to see if she trying to set up housekeeping elsewhere.

ok i dont feel so bad about free ranging now!

Thanks Ron. It has not been one of my favorite kind of daze. Too many things went bad. And I already know the first part of friday will not be much better.

O well hopefully it will get better in the pm.

Okay, so thats three people that are up for a meeting? I have a terrible sense for picking these sorts of things out but I dont know whats open around here and when.

Tonight the wife made pisco sours with egg whites from the yard. Kind of like a key lime meringue liquor.

Welcome to BYC, DIY. Are you Owen's neighbor??
So far you, Rainswolf, Hallerlake, & I are up, although not that time frame, will have to be a different coffee shop.
Also, there's talk of where there can be a WA swap meet/get together. Monroe? Wenatchee?
We're not in "need" of any new birds... We're looking to get a couple (hopefully) Bantam Araucanas from a breeder in Tacoma & maybe a Bantam Cochin from WA4-HPoultryMom's daughter (although I don't know if I could split Nickel & Penny).
Even though we couldn't contribute to the swap meet, we could make some goodies.

Ron sorry to hear about your father in law. Hope things go as well as possible.

Well the part of my day that I ws expecting to start out bad...... went just ok so now I can move on better with the rest of the day.

Ooh! I bet she was pretty though! I love all the interesting colors and lacing. Actually, I don't think I saw a chicken there I didn't like! I already wanted a Black Australorp but after seeing them in person I really want one now! My kids commented that they wanted to hug all the chickens.

Train them up in the way they should go and all that!

Something to keep in mind for raccoons. If they are truly becoming a problem, you can "take 'em out". Washington's hunting season for raccoons just opened:

Small Game Species:
Raccoon

Bag Limit:
None

Season Dates:
Statewide: Sept. 1, 2010 - Mar. 15, 2011

Notes and Exceptions:
CLOSED on Long Island within Willapa National Wildlife Refuge

You'll need a small-game license which is $38 for adults ($20 for youth), plus something for the taxidermy place to make you a warm hat or small rug.
