I looked and looked and tried to find these. Wow - there is some real talent out there...I am glad I did not have to judge this.

oh, I know. I mean, I have an idea how these things are done, but I can't do them as well as those. They are great artists! The people who judged the cakes were all the other cake decorators on the site. Anyone who's a member there can judge. They have different contests every few months. Great fun!

Okay, my hen with the closed eye and not feeling good. She is definitely a bit on the run down side. She goes out with everyone but tires easily. Her craw is no longer large, so I am assuming that she had digested that and has not eaten much in the last 24 hours. I did see her drink. I almost now wonder if she got stung in the mouth. I have not split her from the bunch as I am afraid of her getting depressed. She did try to eat some scratch, but seems to be having trouble. Her closed eye has opened some. I am giving her until tommorrow and I will separate her from the group.

If she is not showing major improvements by tomorrow...how do I "force" water or feed her? Do I give her electrolytes? or something else?

Well, the Barn was FULL of rabbits today! Open Class Rabbits is there until Monday at the Evergreen Fair in Monroe. The schedule is here if anyone wants to bookmark it for next year:

http://www.evergreenfair.org/

They are just getting you primed for the horses that they (the girls) want !!!

No room! No room!!! I told DH if he gets into breeding the goats (which he sounded wishy washy about), we need to downsize our house, and upsize our acreage! Which is something I'd like to do anyway......I dream of having a little log cabin off the grid somewhere. We were torn between Pygmy's and Nigerian Dwarf's for milking, because he want's to make our own goat cheese. We decided to start with Pygmy's and go from there after we learn a thing or two about goats in general. We also walked through the sheep barn today and he said we need to get a couple so that I could spin yarn and knit our clothes......

.........I think he's getting there!!!! LOL!!!

I love the wool my Mom cards, dyes, and spins, then she knits !
I can not knit, tried, cannot.
I quilt, like a fiend, and I paint watercolor.
You renting ?
There have been places for rent out this way, cheap, with acerage.
But where do you/he work ?
That is the problem...where you are is very expensive !

OK so I have been out on the Bay everyday for a week now, and I completely spaced off saying HAPPY BIG BIRTHDAY to Chicken Rustler !!!!

I would give her electrolytes soon, and just keep an eye on her. If she is showing little signs of improvement now, she might suprise you in the next 24 hours. Have you tried feeding her her favorite soft treat? Scrambled eggs? Plain yogurt, etc.? She might be having a hard time swallowing the harder foods. I would start with some yogurt. Hope she gets better soon!

Bad deal going on here...the few hens that were ill with an apparent 'cold' have recovered...and all was well, but in the last 2 days 4 or 5 more have gotten ill with the same thing, runny nose, and some listless, not wanting to eat or drink, just standing.
Some had rales...I gave antibiotics (Sulfa) in the water and they are getting better, all but 1...and this AM found her dead...bummer!
Then opened the Blue Am coop and there stood a 2 mo old pullet with all the symptoms.
She has chirps on respiration, no other birds have but she is the youngest to get this...I am freaking.

I have ordered Tylosin thinking it was MG...but this morning I am thinking it is Newcastle !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
APPLESAUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The coops on the other side of the yard (50yards) are fine, isolated and those birds are inside.
We dip shoes in bleach water, all equipment is washed in bleach water....feed is seperate...this started with outside chickens, so it could very well be from wild birds, and out of the 10 or so that have had symptoms, most recovered the next day, and some got worse the following day, very odd.
I have them on Sulfamet in the water now, at 800 mg, anyone have any other advice ?

Cuckooroo came down with it 2 days ago, and yesterday he was seen eating and eating so I thought he was getting better...this morning he is huddled and stationary...eyes closed

This has to be Newcastle, and there is the vaccine in my refrigerator and I have not given it yet cause was waiting for the RIW's to get a little older to vaccinate them all....I do have the LaSota strain vaccine too...maybe giving them this would help ?
I have to do more research~~~~~any advice ?

I put out some yogurt for everyone yesterday, but I do not think she got much/any. I will separate her for awhile and give her some scrambled eggs and yogurt in the extra pen, just for her to take her time eating. It is still a large pen and is in the shade under a huge willow. Thank you so much for the advise. How did I get her to take the electrolytes?

I am reading up and I think I am going to go ahead and vaccinate the rest of my birds with the Newcastle vaccine, ala water...maybe I will spray, have to read up on the instructions.
At least if this is Newcastle, and it is working it's way slowly through my birds, they will have some immunity built up by the time it hits, if it does hit.
Advice needed....or call me 360-934-9162

To the person with the sickly hen:

It is best to assume a bird acting off is ill and to immediately remove it from the flock and quarantine. Remember your hands, clothing, and shoes can also carry disease. Prevention is the best method of ensuring the health of your flock.

For everyone: Catalogs for the Stevenson, WA show are being sent out on Sept. 12 at which time I will have a better idea when the showroom will be open for viewing and what the schedule of events will be. If you come to the show please remember we all need to be mindful of biosecurity. Exhibitors have put a lot of time, passion, money, and effort into their birds. Also, some birds might be carrying diseases you wouldn't want to take home. Not trying to scare you, but we need to be mindful of health issues when we visit shows.

I have Avia Charge and I just put it in the water. If you have a seperate waterer for her and can give it to her that way, it should work as long as she is drinking. If not you may have to use a syringe and put a few drops of the mixture in her mouth at a time.
