LOL I only have 1 non hatchery bird so far. But I don't think I will ever purchase another bird from a feed store or hatchery. Now that I have done ALOT of research over the past year... I now know the difference between quality and... Well and hatchery stock... I still have along way to go, and alot more to learn. But just chatting with you all has helped me learn quite a bit.

Well Im feeling about 75% better. Still have a cough and slight fever... But so far today I have not had a single migraine! YEAY!!!

That fact alone makes my day SO much better from yesterday! AND the sun is out!

Now if I just had someone here with coop building knowledge, to help me fix my existing coop...

Its little, and doesnt have anywhere NEAR the ventilation that my little motley flock needs.

I'll post pictures and see if anyone here can make sudgestions...

I dunno nuffin my brain died somewhere in the garage sale mayhem.

Anyone know someone who works wood? turning or....
I have some old fine grain stuff I'd rather sell to use for art/creation rather then see it go up in smoke.
Madrone and Cedrus Deodora (Himalayan cedar) in short firewood sized logs

Ooh that is pretty wood !
There was a guy at the Pacific Co fair with an awesome lathe, and he made all sorts of wooden stuff, maybe they are in the yellow pages ?

I posted for a large poratble saw mill last night and got a bite, we have exchanged 2 e-mails so far.
The guy says he has the biggest mill around, and still looking at the photos I sent him, he says the logs will need to be quartered...and do I expect him to do the quartering ?
Well goodness me, I guess I can do it with my wittle 24" saw.......
lau.gif

So I told him yes...he would have to do it all, and the sectioning, and the choking and the yarding outta the bush to the landing and the whole 9 yards !
Got some nice days coming up, so we may gofish again...

This old lady can fell little trees and cut firewood most of the day and even split a few hours, good exercise...but my saw is too wee wee for these big trees.
*************Chicken Rustler could section with his big saw.....

Off to work, glad you are feeling better Cheryl...and if anyone finds the posts of birds for sale from redroosterfarms on CL please post the link, she said she was selling alot of birds on CL......

he must have a band sawmill... the lucas mill can mill any size no quartering .. http://www.lucasmill.com
how big are your logs and what kind of wood? if they are big enough someone will pay you to come take them unless they are rotten or something..

Can you tell I want a swingblade sawmill? lucas or peterson mills are amazing imho

Ok so here is the coop and run...
The front of the coop has an aluminum plate with 1/4" circles drilled every 1/4"... Below the plate is the entrance to the coop. Unfortunately when the door is open the vent plate is mostly covered up. At the moment this coop is 4' high, 5'wide, and 4' deep. I plan on adding an aditional 4'deep x 5'wide x 6'tall space, enlarging the coop from 20sq feet to 40 sq feet... My biggest reasons for wanting this add on is roost space, and ventilation. When I add onto this coop the front will be completely removed, and the two halves will be framed together.

Would you all recomend that I wait until I build the addition to this coop before putting any holes for ventilation? Or should I go ahead and add some to the top corners on both main walls, and just seal them when its complete?

My Ameraucana coop will be built to the right side of this existing run, the run will be partially under the tree, and will extend out in front of my gardens.

What are SO bad about hatchery (or feed store) chickens
idunno.gif
. My guess is that most of us here get our chicks from one or the other
D.gif

I don't have the space or the time to hatch my own.

Can you Pro's answer this question for me ? Is a Red star, Red sexlink and a Golden sexlink pretty much the same chicken??

I'm starting to put my wish list together for Febuary or March. I have One golden sexlink and would like another. along with a couple black sexlinks, red sexlinks (golden?) an Ancona and CAN'T forget another California white

Thanks

The only reason I want to stay away from feed store or hatchery chicks is.... In order for me to be able to justify bringing more in, I have to explain it all to my husband in a way he can understand. And the best way of explaining to him is, that having pure birds gives me more opportunity to sell eggs, chicks, and any adults that I may not want to keep or don't have the heart to cull.

On top of that, I would like to try showing my birds next year. I may not go much past my local fair, but I would like to have something closer to the SOP, than the run of the mill hatchery bird.

I love my hatchery birds just the same as the one non-hatchery bird that I have. And I know that I will love the 8 or so birds that I will eventually bring home from Illia. It really doesn't matter where they came from, its more about each persons reason or purpose behind having them all. For a lot of people hatchery stock is great, and they fill all the basic reasons that people keep them; entertainment, eggs, meat, ect... Then there are others who want to breed for the chosen breeds SOP, or who want to work on a certain quality or trait. Sure, someone could do all of that by starting with hatchery stock, but it would be one LONG haul to reach the specific goal

I don't know if this is the best or most coherent "sp?" way to explain my reasons, but I am trying my best. Please be patient, lol I'm still running a slight fever, and my head isn't quite clear.
