Oh, I noticed your comment about insulating the coop to keep the noise down. I would recommend choosing a breed that is rated as docile, adusting well to confinement. With mine, all hens I only notice occasional squawking usually around egg laying time mid morning. The one day they were really loud it turns out "gasp" for the first time ever in their lives their feeder was empty.

When I checked with my neighbor about whether or not my chickens were bothering her, she told me she had forgotten I had them....yeah. They are great neighbors and her hubby works shift work so I didn't want to bother them. I think our other neighbors barking dog is more of a problem.

Thanks StacyK.... I'm not sure why you don't see coops. I know of quite a few people over in Chelan and Manson that have them. This will be my first Winter of having them over here, so we'll see about the weather. I would think predators might be a big reason more than weather. I raise labs and put hotwire around the base of the yard. I haven't had any problems.

Anneschicks: Thanks I will have a look at your page. I think my wife will enjoy the eggs (as we periodically get fresh eggs from a family friend) and we both hope to enjoy the chickens shenanigans!

My dad has called dibs on the compost (I will be doing deep litter) for next year

Also, seems like BO might be the way to go for a docile, quiet and don't mind confinement? The thought of insulating the coop is just an extra precaution.

Anne. I am forming a group in Grays Harbor (GHPoultry) to help encourage the city council to allow some people to have more than 4 hens. We have a meeting this Friday. Eventually I would like this group to grow into a source of fun and support for other poultry people around our county. Let me know if you want to participate.

Weaveagarden ~ I read the article in the paper about the chicken rancher with 80+chickens (multiple roosters too) on a small residential lot in Hoquiam. Oh my - that was taking backyard chickens to another level and then brought the wrath of city hall down on the rest of you. And of course limiting you to four chickens and requiring a yearly license is silly. Small minded folks.

Although I feel for you, I live outside the city limits in Grays Harbor and am happy to keep my chicken keeping low profile. Although I get enough good natured teasing from friends and family about being a chicken dork. I do love the BYC site and feel like I get my chicken fix here.

StacyK... Yeah, I was born and raised on the West side. My wife's family is over here and every time we'd drive over, I thought about moving. It finally happened last year with a job opportunity and we have no regrets. I think the toughest part of the Winter will be frozen water. My chickens yard goes to the creek, and the coop is about two feet off the ground, so I'm pretty sure they'll be able to walk on the snow and get to the creek. If not, I'll be taking out hot water! At least it won't be pouring rain and muddy in their yard.

I went over to see his place. He is back in a corner of town. I was surprised that it really didn't look like that many chickens. But yes, all of those roosters. I guess there is only one neighbor that is making a big fuss about it. But he seems to have the odors controlled fairly well.

I think that BYC is great, and think that is just fine. I am not usually a joiner myself. This issue has brought me out. I hope that this group will help us with our little problem here. But in the future I would like to see it being a source of some chicken education (biosecurity, and such). If so, we will be letting the public know through the what's happening section of the paper. Maybe I will meet you there, or at a chickenstock sometime.
