Hope everyone has a good week!! I will post pictures when the coop is done!!

Thank you so much crazychickenluver. Way to go on building a coop. We just put a window in our coop today. I keep thinking of ways to improve it, and the ladies may or may not care about the extra light But I know that it makes me feel better.

Justbugged . You'll be glad you put in a window. Because of my large roof over hang to keep me dry in the rain it doesn't do to much in regards to light but I do like being able to look in there without opening doors.

Crazychickenluver. If your coop is a stand up coop going to be moved after being built my best advice is built it as close to the area it will go. Mine is 4x8 and I'm amazed how fast the weight added up.

Hey there!

I have a friend who is trying to rehome two young (25 wks) Golden Sexlink Roo's. Anyone have room or the inclination to take them? They are pretty mellow, but do crow. She would rather not make dinner out of them if she doesn't have to. She has gotten rather attatched but the coop is right next to the house and the crowing is getting to her. They are good to the hens she has and have made good protectors. They are brothers and get along well together too.

You are quite right about the window Excel. The EE hens are getting ready to lay, and I am having a great time spying on them.

Of course they can see me to.

They keep wanting out of the coop and pen to chase the puppies around the yard, and eat the bugs.

We used the glass from a picture frame that the puppies had chewed the frame of, so now I have three pieces of glass the same size. I am going to hold on to the extra glass in case the pane ever breaks. My DH made the window frame so that it just unscrews off so it is very easy to access.

Thats how I did it also.

HD has a section where you can buy glass in different sizes. This allowed me to do it a lot cheaper.
Tried searching Craigs for used windows but everything was to big. This worked out well.

Oh you guys. Now I am going to have to put a window in mine. I have a lot of glass and windows around the place. Now to pick the right size.

I often wonder how they are sleeping in there. Last time I left the door open late, I found all 36 of them roosting and laying on the upper roost area. (about 14square feet total) - They have another 20 square feet of roost and 14 of floor space too.

Most of them were laying on the roosting boards. They are 3 months old now. Will they ever spread out and stay on the roosts? Or am I doomed to have squatting and sprawling hens forever?

I usually decide by the noise level of the crows in the backyard right now. And of course I live so far away. I have only done two so far, but there are two more that are building steam on their crows. I am really glad that I ended up with only 12-14 males. I had thought that I would have at least 25.
I don't like doing the processing much, but I must admit I am glad that I know that my chicken had a relatively happy life, although shorter than I would like. I also have to admit that the flavor of the meat is worth the effort and expense of raising them. I don't think I will ever be happy to go back to fast poultry again.

HI Rain My Darling Husband is willing to answer questions about processing the birds. He and my son did it for the first time this spring. They skinned the birds rather than plucked feathers.
He knows a number of web sites and other info. I helped some at the end of the day, and I have seen the whole process done, but I am no expert. If would would like to call just send me a e-mail or a pm. Christina

Ok so update on my new coop. It is 8x8 and the floor and two walls are in!!

I can hardley wait. The hens are checking out the work being done and are patiently waiting to move in. And can you believe it I already found some new chicks to add to the brood. Just waiting for a response to the email I sent to them regarding their craigslist post. Anyone know how many hens I can get away with??????

I also think that my naked neck chicken is blind in one of her eyes....not sure how it happened but hope she does ok. I am not sure what to do for her but she seems to be getting along ok.....

So let me know if anyone has some chicks they are going to be selling...I may want to add them to my growing collection....
