So, I was wondering if anyone travels much and what kind of arrangements do you make for your chickens. I am going on vacation for 10 days in March and am wondering what to do. I have a neighbor boy that can collect eggs and change water and feed, but I don't trust him to know if something is wrong, and know what to do about it. Anyone in my area interested in checking on my girls for me once or twice? Maybe we can set up a chicken sitting network?

I'm in Bothell on a bi-weekly basis right now. I'm sure I could coordinate appointments, and swing up 522 to come home, I usually do anyway in order to avoid 405 when I'm done.

I don't travel much myself.. nowhere to go but home, and airfare would run me at least 2k now that the baby is 2.

I would do the same though, find a kid that wants to make a few bucks and "train" them in the chores, and have someone drop by.

My husband and I go on one trip every year, just the two of us. It is not one I am willing to give up for my chickens. NOOO way! I appreciate the offer, I will keep you in mind as we get closer to March.

I've been teaching a couple of the neighborhood kids how to take care of the ducks while I am away. I ask their parents first and make sure the parents will step up if there is a problem. I've found most parents are happy to have their kids have a responsibility outside of the home, and want to help make it go well for them.

I have some questions for those in the Spanaway, Graham, South Hill Puyallup area. Where do you get your layer feed from and what brand do you use? Do you use DE and where do you get it?
I have been to Del's and they only carry Del's brand of feed and never heard of DE. I've thought of trying some vitamin/electrolyte supplements just to be sure the chickens have enough of the right stuff. Dels have "rooster booster" brand(?) and I wasn't sure if this would work.
I've also been to Graham Hay Market and they carry Layena in 50lb bags or by the pound in bulk, but are a bit more $$ and I've been to Sumner Animal Grub but don't remember what brand they carry but do have 10lb bags of feed at more reasonable prices. I haven't checked yet about DE or supplements at these 2 places.
Thanks for any suggestions, ideas and/or input.

Great! Thanks for the info, but only one problem-I only have 3 hens and 1 roo. 50lbs of each would fossilize before they could eat it all.

I do know they have smaller 10lb bags of feed. I just wonder if they have smaller bags of DE?

The ingredient list of layer feed seems simple enough to duplicate. Has anyone considered using foods from the grocery store to make their own chicken feed as long as it includes 16+protein(soybean flour has 35%, scrambled eggs, etc), calcium(yogurt/dairy), grains (cereal grade corn, oats, wheat, flax, barley, etc.) plus greens? I see alot of people on BYC using these items as treats, but seems to me if some of each were mixed together would make comparable feed.

I haven't tried to give my chickens any more than treats, but I used to supplement my hogs with some really good stuff. In the winter I made a slop that they just loved. I even served it to them warm on cold days. I suppose you could do the same with chickens.

I buy all my feed at Webster Road Feed right on 304th and Webster road, Graham. I live just about 2 miles down the road so it is very convenient. I buy my layer in bulk but I'm not sure what brand it is.

I use granular stall dry because it has enough DE in it to keep the odor down.
