Their outdoor run (which I am going to start tomorrow) will be completely fenced in (top and sides, and into the ground) with a mix of hardware cloth and poultry netting. They will not be outside in the evening/night so hopefully predators will be at a minimum. I am more concerned about vermin.

My dad and I have been working on a a rat only box for rats to get in and eat the poison and keep out the other neighborhood animals. So far I think I have poisoned one rat

It's been wet! The girls have been enjoying the slugs!

That sounds great. I saw the fencing and thought that was their run. Now it makes sense.

Lovely!!! I have let the chickens out into a run today. Sorted so I could sell a few. Sold 5 - She got me down to $10 each. I was needing money really badly, but they lost their entire flock of 8 to Racoons. The teen daughter was a kindred chicken spirit (you can just tell, can't you?), so I was happy to have them go to the family.
I have 4 more going with my friend who helps me with the handyman type work. And another woman said she would take any I had left to sell. I think that will be 4 - for a total of 13 gone, and 9 of them for money. Time to buy feed again. That leaves me with 12 pullets and my Roo, "Pinky". I also have 7 more 8 week old pullets at my moms (Deleware, Welsummer and Cuckoo Marans). And 19 assorted in the brooder who will likely be cockerels, but may surprise me. In those I have 4 that look like EE's. One is a beautiful chocolate brown, so I hope for a hen. But it will likely be a male, and a dark cornish to boot.
I am supposed to get down to 8 at my house and 8 at my moms. 2 months to make the decision on who to keep. I sure with they were all laying so I would know the color eggs and a bit more about their temperament.

I had a bantam rhode island red chick hatch today. I had my white rock go broody before the chicks natural mother. So once she want broody too I divided 4 eggs between them. So I have 3 more to hatch. It is like 2 inches and its so tiny LOL Got a big mouth too. Loud little peeper!

They have set a limit of 8 hens only.

I am preparing (with the help of my doctor and some friends and neighbors) a proposal for a variance asking them to grandfather me in at my 18 with one rooster. This will be after I have given the neighbors a chance to really test out whether my Roo bothers them. I want to be fair. But I have to feel that if I don't complain about the dogs at all hours, and the noisy bird and roaming cats, they should be fair about my Roo if he occasionally crows before 7AM. So far I have heard him crow 4 times (groups of up to 3 crows). He is really not overly loud, and seems to only crow when there seems to be a real problem. So, I am crossing my fingers.

In the meantime. I am going ahead with my plan to do 18. If I have to adjust that, I will.
