I don't think I could bring myself to eat cats. I am not usually grossed out, but the thought of cooked kitty makes me cringe.

I am not sure why, but I haven't been getting notices when posts go on here lately. Finally got one today, but none from yesterday, and look at all the activity. Hmmmm?

I know, I thought it was strange too. I've always heard that it was the favorite meat of the old mountain men though so I had to try it when we had the opportunity--turns out they were right.

I do a ton of foster care for the local animal shelter (Kittymomma) so you would think it would gross me out too. I think we've been raising and hunting our own meat for too long though. The only thing I haven't tried to put on the table that one of us has shot so far is coyote...

the thought of that does make my stomach turn. Haven't had any problems with raccoons or opposums yet either though, I know people eat those, but the potential diseases kind of freaks me out.

Opposums are safe to eat they don't carry any of the diseases that raccoons and other wildlife do. Their body temperature is to low. I had to learn about them last year when one wily opposum mother decided that under our deck was an ideal place to raise her children. My Yorkie thought that was a really bad idea. The opposums move around after dark looking mostly for vegetable matter, and the Yorkie would then go out back and bark at them. We live way to close to all the neighbors for her to do that. We relocated the opposums to a more suitable neighborhood over the course of a few weeks. So eating them wouldn't be a problem. I on the other hand, am just not that hungry.

P.S. I do have a recipe for cooking possums in one of my cookbooks.

I live in Woodinville, The bobcat was here Tues. Wed morning my GSD went nuts wanting out at 6:00am. she is 13 yrs old and about 90% deaf. she sleeps by the side of our bed. My wife let her out but didn't see anything. I work nights. I'm hoping that bobcat got a taste of my electric fence I have about 8,000 volts going through it. Haven't seen it since.

I'm pretty sure my two RIR and my Calif. white are the ones NOT laying yet. One of my gold sexlinks gave me her THIRD double yoker in two weeks

We had a lot of problems with a bobcat back in August. Got three of my DD's Japanese hens. :-( We only had the fabric type bird wire over the run, and he just tore it open one night and helped himself to a hen straight out of the coop. The next night two were missing. We didn't know what was taking them. The next night, I let the dog out and saw him sitting on the roof of our small coop. Needless to say, the fabric mesh has been replaced with wire and no more problems. We are just north of Duvall/South of Monroe, on the west side of the valley.

Still waiting for that first pullet egg!

I am so envious. I think I will warm my hen house soon so that I get some activity over the winter.

I am also going to have to make my house a bit more secure. As the food is more scarce in the hills, I expect those Racoons to discover my coop. I am glad I am back home to get these projects started. I did enjoy my trip to Seattle and Issaquah to see docs and my son. But there truly is no place like home!

I am in Lakewood, Washington (south of Tacoma/Seattle). Raising 12 chickens on 1 1/4 acre. Our city allows 16/acre but that includes ducks, rabbits, etc. Total 1/acre. Based on that, I can have 20 but am very happy with my 12. Just hens and just getting started.

Hi interlaaken,

I'm also in Lakewood & have 10 chickens. We got our first six at the age of 5 months in March. The other we got a few days old in early June. We're having a lot of fun. Btw we live off of nyanza. We've also noticed quite a bit more predator action..... The usual coyotes, racoons, foxes, eagles, hawks & owls.

We are looking to buy land in Kingston. We've been looking at some 10 acre plots that can be made into two 5 acre plots. We can cash out on about half the cost. Is there anyone interested in living or owning property in this area that would be interested in the other half? If so please email me at dmcgaughey at gmail dot com.
