Coop update for my Wahingtonians...
big_smile.png

Inside of coop is almost done. I just need the exterior chicken door and two nest boxes (with external access inside the shed)

Right now I am working on the run... gate is in, and next comes the top. Trying to predator proof as much as possible.

As you can see the chickens are helping out by weeding.

Here is the inside. They love the big window... and can see me coming!

With the top done and the exterior door, I will be done for awhile... I am thinking of getting an electric chicken door, so when we are on vacation, folks don't have to rush over at the crack of dawn!

More to come, I am sure...

Oh heck yeah, there's no way I could have built something so solid (ow) for 40 bucks. I'm still trying to figure out how to get it into my back yard though, I didn't think that far ahead.

I'm thinking really big crowbar.. or maybe bribe some big burly guys with beer and bbq. (Nice alliteration, don't you think?

Brennant, I would make your fence higher. My birds would fly over that and I have "heavy-bodied" large chickens. But they fly out of a fence higher than that and it is a big pain.

Also a medium sized to large dog could jump in and get them. I don't know if you are concerned about dogs getting in but they have been the only real predator my chickens have encountered, and that is when they flew out of my fence!

It is not done. There is going to be a completely framed top with hardware cloth

Also, they will not "free range" unless I am in the yard. The folks with dogs on the other side of the yard (which you can't see in the pic) have a 6' fence. I am going to clip their wings as well.

Thanks for the concern tho!

Updated sales list:

I do not ship, sorry....However, I'll be going to Portland in November (for Thanksgiving) and could transport then. Or you're welcome to come to Okanogan County and I'll meet you somewhere.

I do require a 50% (non-refundable) deposit on any of these birds, though as I've transported them 8+ hours (one way) only to have people flake out on me!

2 Black Sumatra Laying Hens, from private show breeder back East. Hatched in June. These are very nice little birds and very rare. Vaccinated against Marek's. Should start laying soon. I just don't need 6 of these so I'm selling two to thin down my flock a little bit. They will lay off-white eggs and do lay all through the heat of the summer. $20 EACH or both for $35

2 Mille Fleur cochin bantam roosters (hatched in June) price reduced to $10 each

1 Mille Fleur cochin cockerel, unrelated to either of the above roosters $10

1 white bantam cochin rooster, 2009 Grand Champion of the Okanogan County Fair (spring 09 hatch) from Tom Roebuck lines $25 FIRM PENDING

1 Black Crevecoeur cockerel. Hatched in June. Very friendly and extremely rare. $10

1 Golden Laced Cochin Rooster, 1.5 years old...very gorgeous & friendly. Selling because he's now related to most of my breeders so I need some new bloodlines. $20 PENDING

1 Pair of Buff Columbian Cochins (Standards) and project birds. VERY HUGE, friendly. Hatched last spring (2009). $75/pair will not split up

1 trio of Lemon Blue cochins (standards)--HUGE, fluffy, friendly birds. VERY rare. Do not breed true yet but these are a good start. Just over 1 year of age. The hens are laying and the rooster produced many exceptionally cute chicks this summer! $150 for the trio

1 Pair of black & white muscovies. These guys are 6 years old. The duck still lays an abundance of eggs, sits and hatches ducklings. VERY good mother--will hatch anything. The drake is hilarious and friendly...still making fertile eggs, too! PENDING

1 Sebastopol Gander hatched in March. Very friendly and from Holderread's Waterfowl Farm in Oregon. Smooth breast good wings. Excellent breeder-quality bird. $100

I just got an ugly shock on this gorgeous afternoon. As a nanny, I get the chance to go play outside on days like these and I wasn't going to pass the chance up, seeing as how it looks to be turning gray and wet again soon. The sweet little 2 year old girl and I headed out to Mercer Slough for some mushroom hunting and duck-watching. (No mushroom eating, just looking!!)

After an hour of perfect sun and lots of mushrooms, ducks, snakes and dragonflies, I rounded a corner on the boardwalk and thought we'd hit the wild animal sighting jackpot when I saw a big pretty turtle shell. Then I noticed that the shell was unusually decorated...with a swastika drawn in the turtle's own blood. The poor creature had been caught by someone very recently and had one of its claws torn right off. Wisely, he had all of his appendages tucked under his shell by the time we found him. There was some movement, so I know he was still alive, but he certainly didn't look like he was doing very well.

After a moment trying to figure out what the hell was going on, I decided there was nothing I could do for it at the moment, so we moved forward. Not 5 feet ahead, on the other side of the boardwalk was another one, also with one amputated claw. No swastika on this one. I don't know if we surprised the monster doing this and he or she didn't get the chance to finish up or the person simply decided two swastikas was overdoing it. I felt sick. Nothing like mindless brutality to take the sun right out of the sky.

As soon as I got home and got the baby down for her nap, I reported the situation to the local park ranger. I just wish I could have gotten there before someone had the chance to do this. It also makes me wonder if its even safe going to that park alone, or in this case, with a tiny child. There are some corners of that place that feel really removed, which is why I like it. Perhaps I'll think twice about going there without my husband after this.

Anyone in lacy?
