this is my first year owning chickens. we have an orchard and a fruitstand a mile up

these chickens are spoiled..... they love cherries and all the culls they get from the fruitstant. currently they are munching on pumpkins i split in half with a shovel.

Do you have SNOWSHOES for your chickens ?? My girls don't really care for pumpkin. I gave them warm oatmeal tonight. they like that!

Ron, My spoiled, picky girls are not fond of them either, but thanks. I appreciate the thought.

I just spent the last hour out in the cold putting the heated waterer out in the coop, had a hard time with all of the extension cords to the lights, heat, and now the waterer. I can't wait until next summer when my dad comes up to help put some electricity up on the hill where my coop is and my shed is going in. Can't wait til my shed os up there so I can put all of my garden and chicken crap away.

PS- Going to go check out the Maltby Community Center tomorrow. I will let you know what's up when I get back. Then hopefully I can send out a mass email so that I can get a more acurate head count. I am tired tonight, so I am going to bed early, I will check back in tomorrow. GOOD NIGHT!

Do you know how to sex by feathers on young chicks? If so, I would take your best guess. If not, I would like 2 of each. With luck one of each will be a she. I think I can probably find a home for a Black copper rooster. The barnevelder may not be difficult either since it is a rare-ish breed. Then all I will need is a Pendanesca to round out my dark egg layers. I will have to figure out which of my chickens at my mom's I will be finding new homes for.

If you don't mind picking them up, and keeping them for a little bit, I will try to get Moody's daddy to bring them to me when he heads back this way. And I owe you more than one for this.

Ron. Well, since you asked. Light is back on today and I got 3. One very large light brown (from my BR I think, her 3rd egg) One smaller light/med brown (not sure who that is from, but it is a new layer I think) and 1 green (From Angela - Wheaten Americauna - her first I think) So from my count, I think I have 3EE's and 3Brown egg layers laying..... Unless it is 4??? for a total of 6-7 of 12 laying.

And this in only 9 days since starting, and an even 2 dozen total layed. Wow, amazing!

I forgot to say that I made a deal with my across the street neighbor who runs our produce market here. He is going to bring me a big bag of chicken goodies every week. I said I would exchange eggs, and he said not neccesary. But I think he will be getting free eggs a lot!
