UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE--------- CHICKS WILL BE AVAILABLE----------FREE!
I will let everyone know when I am done giving them away.
Just PM me so I can set up a good time for both of us.
I work 10 hr days from dark to dark so calls during the day are confusing sometimes.
After 6:00 pm above the fairgrounds in Monroe is where it is going to happen.

AVAILABLE!!!

Forgot to mention cities south of me.

Question: I don't know if many of you do, but does anyone here raise Turkens? I'm wondering if I am the only one facing the problem of my Turkens disliking the constant cold temperatures and rain. It's not freezing, really (well. . now it is.) but it is low enough all year round to make a naked necked chicken complain. Aren't Turkens supposed to be hardy of all climates? My girl (and previous girls) always tries to keep herself in whatever sunlight or lamp-light she can find, and otherwise sort of shivers, but deals with it.

I know that they say that you shouldn't put chicks out until they have feathers on their necks. My thoughts on this are that because the neck is so long on chickens, the cold weather is able to cool their blood. So it stand to reason that the Turkens would have some challenges in our cooler weather.

How about cutting off a couple of wool socks and making them little turtle necks? Or you could buy some of the hen savers and sew turtlenecks on to those for the winter.

I 'crack' myself up sometimes!

Seriously.... It might not be such a bad idea.

dont need snowshoes yet.. the snow level hasnt dropped yet... but it was funny to watch them in the snow 2 weeks ago. they tried flying over it. they stay in a dog kennel at night.... my chicks stayed in a separate pen during the summer with a dog house... i thought i messed them up.... cos those chicks never roosted till i put them in with the big ones... the would all dog pile in the doghouse in a certain order... so cute really.

but nah... the chickens are kep next to a picking cabin and the tractor can easily plow a way for my car to get to them when that time comes.... i already have 2 heat lamps on all the time and had the water heater plugged in in oktober. i feed them alot of scratch at night to let them keep warm and maybe get a little fat ... dont work they run around all day.
today i worried about the eggs freezing... but they only laid 3 out of 9... and they just dont seem to freeze in that doghouse....

WeaverGarden--

I'm probably going to be up in the Marysville area next weekend (12-13) so if Kim gets those chicks for you I can get them to Olympia if you can have someone take them the rest of the way. DH has his vette in the garage and will kill me if I keep the little dander makers in there, but I think I can stick them in my son's room for a day or two without any problems. I should know by the end of this weekend for sure so if you're interested I'll let you know.

That would be such a cute idea, actually. My polish already have hairdos due to such rain, why not covers for turken necks?

I'm not sure it is just the neck though - I hear they have a lot less feathers in general, but maybe that just means for the neck. Who knows.. I guess if I do try and cover her up, I'll find out. .

It is supposed to get even colder as we approach Sunday (27 degrees, ouch) but atleast I have sunlight to worship! I got soo tired of all that rain from earlier. . But, then again, the sun only reaches the farthest end of our property. Most of this place is still under frost by the end of the day.

Shannon - you are such a life saver. Between you and Kim I will get this accomplished. It would really help if you could. I am going to have to bring lots of goodies to the party in Feb for all of my new friends.

By the way the little con man (Muscovy) is still living with my friendly handyman type friend, who will not let me fill my freezer with this guy. (He really is a charmer as far as ducks go). We are probably going to be rehoming him with someone up around Anderson Island. Ironic that he had to come this way to find a home back up near you.

Are you looking for full sized hens? I know of someone who has ameracaunas near hood canal/seabeck. I am hoping to get some of their chickens in the spring. The name of thier farm is Cree farm and you can look them up on google. They have beautiful birds that are pure bred not EE's
