I can't say because it looks like I won't see mine for a little while. But I hear they look great from Kim!
I think the chance of having a hen that will lay some nicely dark eggs is definitely worth the price of FREE! Even more, as at the least you will get a hen that is mostly Maren or Barnevelder and both are reasonable layers. Or you have a cockerel that someone (maybe you) can put in the freezer. Plus it is a chance to see what turns out first hand.
It's all good!
And Thanks again Eagle
So, I realized I forgot to tell you all that when we had our eggs for dinner last night 2 of them were double yolkers. A nice large blue green and a light brown. Yippee!
Todays count 6 for 12 - 2 green and 4 brown. Also today my last of the 4 Easter Egger Types layed an egg. She got out of her pen and crawled way back deep under a boat I have in the back yard. I had to move the boat over which was quite a challenge. And this after having chased her back into the yard 3 times. Moody helped me find her and I was a little bit afraid that he might think it a game and hurt her, so I carried her back to the yard and put her over the fence. Then I tripped over some boat type debris that had no business being all over my back yard, and landed smack against the fence.
Unfortunately Teddy's first nice light grass green egg didn't survive. beautiful orange yolk was running down the fence and steaming because it was still warm. Less important, I kind of hurt myself a little bit. I will be sore tomorrow.
So, I think I have 9-10 laying.... I think it is 10. All of them have started laying in less than 2 weeks. Wow! My Dark Cornish was sitting on other chickens eggs today, so maybe soon. But my BO doesn't seem to even get what all the fuss is about. She has always been an independent girl. I wish she would eat some of her chicken food. Maybe that would help. She likes grass, worms, yogurt and fruit, and thinks that chicken feed is for the (well, uh) birds.
