Anyone going to the chicken show in Chehalis at the Lewis Co Fairgrounds this weekend? I'm hoping to get stuff done around here and go tomorrow. I've never been to one before!

You know... in all the cold we're having, I have a broody! LOL She's been setting for the past week. She's so sweet, I couldn't resist putting a couple good eggs under her to see what happens. We may have Christmas chicks!! and... they may have to come in the house if it's still so cold out there, maybe momma too. I've got a cage for the chicks, but not momma. hmmm, might have to look into that. I dunno. Momma is a blue orpington (except with a rose comb...from Del's) and she's so sweet, not a mean broody at all, just sweet.

Anyone want a RIR cockerel? He's 5 months old and I have 2 other good roos. He's a bit nervous and has been causing problems, possibly because of the other roos, though. He hasn't attacked me, but doesn't seem to be that friendly with the rest of the flock. He was *supposed* to be a pullet when I got him with two others. I'm in Mossyrock.

After today that's what I am for sure.

What happened?

Yesterday I went to check on all the kittens, and I found the smallest one dead.

The kitten was very malnourished when it came to my house, and I think that it may have had a respiratory infection too. I should have been more aggressive with taking the kittens to the vet, but money is a bit tight right now, and I don't plan on keeping these kittens. I am going to give them their first shots though.

To top things off the ground is frozen to hard to dig a hole, and the garbage was picked up earlier in the morning. So now I have a dead kitten in my freezer.

I'll have to wait until things warm up to take care of things. Of course I am home alone, so there is no one to help me clean things up.

I often rely on DH to handle things like this, or I call my son to come over. But I decided that I was just going to tough this one out by myself. So that was what was making me a bit crazy yesterday. At least all the chickens have survived this cold snap. I'm still dreading the power bill.

Did I miss something. I didn't know we had a date for the party yet. I am totally excited if we do.

6 for 12 eggs today.

I think I am going to string clear LED Christmas lights in the coop tomorrow. It isn't what I had planned when I bought them after Christmas last year, but will work very well I think. Less than 2 weeks til Christmas. I am not ready, and I am not in the spirit. Maybe the chickens are and can inspire me.

The party is tentatively set for February 28th. We just don't have a place for it that will be really affordable, for the few of us that have RSVP'ed to Kim. I think that we are waiting for more interest in the party. We also need some type of commitment, so that one person doesn't have to end up paying a larger share of the cost of a facility. I know that the Senior Center here in Enumclaw is about 20 dollars per hour. All day is 200.00. The center also has a kitchen, chairs, and tables, included in the cost. There will also be the cost of plates, silverware, and cups above the facility cost. I haven't heard much else about the party at this point.

I am aware that no one has really considered looking further away from the Woodinville area. I also really don't want to take over all the planning of the party either. I just think that we may have to think outside of where we have been looking, so that we can find something very inexpensive. Everyone seems to be concerned about finances right now including myself, and I think that we may have more people willing to come if it's as cost is as low as we can make it right now.

( when talking about the hen limitation laws )

As for our weather. . . No precip. In fact, forecast says we shouldn't get any until Monday, even though it earlier said it was supposed to rain today. I am not anticipating it though because the moment it is supposed to start, it isn't going to stop for the next 8 days after it starts, possibly even more. (but I will admit we need rain.

. . . Just a little )

Oh, and a grouse suddenly stopped by the chicken coop today. So weird - I have never seen one around here, let alone around at all, and suddenly a blue female lands on the ground, right in the middle of the flock, and gets chased back up into the air. It dallies around the roof of the coop, then tries again, gets chased, waits, tries again - It was quite persistent for whatever it wanted. My guess is water - Even though temps are in the mid to high 30's, and the frost is gone . . . ALL of the water is still block frozen. The ponds, the puddles, the birdbaths... Everything is just a block of ice, except for our chicken's water. And if there was to ever be any fresh water, well, there wouldn't be. . . It hasn't rained in 13 days now. This is just too weird for winter.

Oh, and as another update: This summer I'm getting a Shamo pair!

Aaaah Oriental Game Fowl. . . Sooo beautiful. Of course, I will keep them seperate from my dear sweet egg layers, but they will be family too come this new year.

Ron is correct. I think Michael is OK for food till about Christmas. He has received 3 bags pellets & 1 bag scratch so far this month. Do you still need his phone number?

I did ask at Reber Ranch if they had any kind of meeting room that we could use or rent, but unfortunately they do not. I tried to find out today the cost for renting a meeting room at the hospital, but there was no one around that knew the answer. I'll try to find out soon. I'll post as soon as I hear.

I'm heading out to Great Falls on Monday morning for work so I may not be around this coming week, but if I can I'll try to check in from the hotel.

Russ- and would you all quit posting free chickens, please!!! I'm in the burbs and have a 4 pet limit. Doesn't that mean 4 in the house, 4 in the coop and 4 in the yard? Suppose I could add 4 in the garden shed, 4 in the car, 4 in the pickup, 4 on the deck. Anyone see a trend here?

i had a grouse that lived near the coop for a month (a month ago) and it would eat and drink... and i would catch it in the coop. it would follow the chicken flock around when they were out free roaming..... it was a big and pretty grouse.... i think it thought itself a chicken... but one hen would chase it away from the flock.... sad it would of been nice to keep and see what the rooster would do with it....

I don't think we have limited the party to just the woodinville area. Maltby and Bothell would be fine with me LOL. we have just looked at places we know of. IF any one knows of a place. Just speak up. I think we are open to anything for a good price
