Barnevelder
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barnevelder double-laced hens (large fowl)The Barnevelder is a medium heavy breed of chicken named after the Dutch town of Barneveld. It is a cross of 19th century Dutch landrace chickens with Asian breeds imported to Europe in the mid-late 19th century such as the Brahma, Cochin, Croad Langshan and Malay.

History
Hans Schippers, the Dutch authority on the breed, reports the following on the development of the Barnevelders [1]: Between c. 1850 and 1875 Cochin, Malay, Brahma and Croad Langshan arrived from Asia and were crossed with local fowl. One particular strain of brown egg laying fowl were like Black Cochins in appearance and were kept as a meat bird (these were not, however, purebred Cochins). Around 1885 these birds were crossed with Brahmas and the offspring of this cross was crossed with Langshan. In 1898 American utility birds ("Amerikaanse Nuthoenders"), a rough version of the Golden Wyandotte (apparently not dissimilar to the American Winnebago, a ‘precursor’ to the Golden-laced Wyandotte) were crossed into the developing breed followed in 1906 by Buff Orpingtons. Overall in the development to follow the Croad Langshan continued to have the biggest influence and contributed hardiness, brown eggs and good winter production.

A similar account, bar the influence of the "Amerikaanse Nuthoenders", was given in 1930 by P. L. Wijk, District State Poultry Expert, Apeldoorn and P. Ubbels, State Poultry Consultant, Beekbergen, The Netherlands in his contribution on The Origin of the Barnevelder and Welsummer Breeds [2]. The authors add that

"n 1899 it was ascertained that the fowls on the farms in the neighbourhood of Barneveld showed some uniformity. This could be explained by the fact that poultry keepers always obtained their setting eggs from the farmers who came to market with the finest eggs, and who as a rule used dark-coloured cocks for breeding."

According to Wijk & Ubbels, efforts were made to obtain more uniformity in colour and type from 1910 onwards and the name Barnevelder dates from that time. An Association of Barneveld Breeders was established in 1921 which fixed the standard.

Indian Game (Cornish) may have been crossed into the Barnevelders in Britain sometime after their importation into Britain in the 1920s.[3]

The breed gained worldwide recognition and was exported to many countries because of its ability to lay approximately 180-200 large brown eggs per year.

Well I just had my FIRST CASUALITY about half hour ago

at dusk I think it was a coyote. we didn't see it. It was one of my White leghorns. which suprises me because they can fly. My daughter heard the rooster make a funny sound so she ran out there. there was a pile of feathers and a trail of them leading into the woods. I had been out there with them ALL day. came in for ten minutes. to check the chicken page. well that will be one less white egg. My daughter is crying her eyes out. GLAD it wasn't one of her two ducks.

Eagle - Thanks for posting that. I was thinking as I looked at the chick page link you sent to me, that they feathers look so similar to my dark cornish's feathers. Some of the history you sent might explain it.

Do you know where there are pics of barnevelder cockerel chicks. Just wondering how they look at this age.

Kim. I was watching Gizmo in the larger brooder that I put them in today, and I think Giz may be a she. We will see. I wonder what the little one that died looked like. Was she light or dark, and did she look like the others? I think you said she was a Barnie.

For both of you, I will try to get some pics tonight..... But the lighting isn't great in that room right now. So if not, I will keep working on it this weekend.

Nyrial, Kim, rainplace, weaveagarden, Thanks. The Bad thing is, it shouldn't have happen. I knew the coyote was around, I saw him two days ago. It was my own darn fault, I should of put them away before I came in. I've been pushing my luck by coming inside for 10 min. at a time and letting them get too far a way from the house .Now that he's had a meal I 'm sure he will be back. I feel bad that I lost a girl. BUT I feel worse for the terror my poor Chicken Little had to go through. Man I'm getting VERY soft in my old age.
Well I'm going to go check on my flock then to bed. Have a nice weekend EVERYONE !!!!!!!!!!!

9 eggs today. That is the most so far. 3 more to go, and I will have 12 for 12. I think all but one are laying. I didn't know for sure, but am possitive that Gracie, my Buff Orpingington just laid her first egg today. She was really having some difficulty, but finally at 5:30 today, I collected a beautiful little elongated pullet egg from the nest that she had just vacated. Yay Gracie!

I did manage to get some pics of the free chicks from Eagle2026

They are Barnevelders and Black Marans. He is working out some not quite perfect genes, so I am able to get them free. Yay Mike!

Please note that there are 2 Marans girls. One has brown coloring on many of her black feathers - She is the one farthest in the box. The other one is flanked on each side by the Marans cockerels. It is hard to tell, but she is is the darkest black of all of them.

Here they are:

All 7 chicks

The Marans

The Barnevelders That is Gizmo in the front - (s)he has the lighter color - named by Kim's son while they were fostering for me.

This is Mya my Dark Cornish. Note the double lacing. This is like the Barnevelders that I just saw on a link sent to my by Mike. She is my last hold out for an egg. She may be laying, because she sings along with everyone else, but I have never seen her in a nest, or on an egg.

Hello Washington BYCers!

We are in lovely Woodinville, Hollywood Hill.

Looking forward to reading all about your chicken raising adventures in the evergreen state!

Also - Ron I see u recently lost a girl. Sorry. During the recent cold snap I lost two girls - a RIR and a Au Sex Link. They were always getting out of the run and it caught up to them

Sorry about your girls.

You might want to think about a potluck party that we are going to have in Kirkland in February. KMHunter is the host, but others are helping to organize it.

He/she looked a lot like Gizmo. Lighter in color. I really hope Gizmo is a girl and you get to keep her. He/She is a very calm sweet chick.
