OK.... Another question for the Duck and Goose Mommy's (and Daddy's). If you have only female geese, will they still lay like chickens do? It seems like I read somewhere that they don't. But that seems odd to me.

I'm crying. I think I may have to find a home for my favorite goose and gander. The owner of the house next door moved back into it over the holidays, and Ranaya's honk when I let her out in the morning, is more than they can bare. As of right now the island doesn't have any laws governing poultry other than state guidelines for health. I do not want to get in a situation where I am battling for my flock. I opened up the conversation with them about 30 minutes ago, and volunteered to do everything I could to make it work. They had a dog that use to bark incessantly and after a few years of dealing with it, one day I stormed over there and said something. They did something about it and it has never been a problem since. I know I have to rehome Ranaya, but I couldn't make her go alone... oh goodness gracious how did she steal my heart like that?

Oh no! Is there anything that you can do for them. Say buy them one of those calming noise machines that night sleepers use to cut the sound when sleeping during the day? Install a loud waterfall between the geese and the neighbors? I know when it is raining, you can hardly hear Pinky's crow from 20-30 feet away.

I hope something works out for this. Make sure they know how much it will hurt you to rehome them.

I really think this is something I'm going to have to be proactive about and nip in the bud. I've been making sure to speak with the all the neighbors about the waterfowl since I started getting them. They weren't living in their house when I got them, renters were. I saw her at the mailbox yesterday and started some small talk. At one point I said, "oh, I've gotten some ducks!" Her entire demeanor changed as she said, "Yeah, they sure are loud." Very next question out of her mouth, "Did you have to get permits for them?" I said, "I don't need any." She said, "you sure?"

So obviously they have been thinking about this and talking about it. I kept putting on a cheerful face and mentioned that I knew the duckhouse wasn't looking great, but that I had the cedar siding for it in the garage, but I was going to wait till dry time to put it up. She blurted out, "You think it might be too close to the property line?"

See what I am getting at? I think they have been stewing over there and not saying anything. I walked over there today to let them know that I am a good neighbor, and that I want to make this work. I know Ranaya is the problem, she is one loud gal. It's not all day long, but it lasts for about 5 minutes or more first thing in the morning. Then anytime there is a disturbance... i.e then getting into or out of their car. So what do I do?

I don't know who the "us" is that you're referring to but I ain't even remotely related to a chimp. If by "us" you are talking about humans, then I would say humans are the only "species" created in the image of God and all other animals are created according to their kind.

Having said that, I understand what you're saying about the ducks and geese and can go along with that. I would imagine a domestic cat here in the USA could possibly be mounted by say some kind of African Wildcat for example and the mating not take. As you said, something like horses and donkeys or maybe not take at all.

God Bless,

God Bless,

My apologies, Tailfeathers.

More info please Donna

Are you actually in a town? How much land do you have? Is the location of the waterfowl building the only place you can have it?

Depending on the answers, I think you may be being too good of a neighbor. I know they own the house, but they haven't been living there. And the rest of the neighbors are OK with it. A dog incessantly barking and a bit of noise for a few minutes by a goose are not the same. And if something can be done about that period of time that is the sleeping part of the day, I wouldn't think the noise when they arrive or leave the house is that big of deal. Dogs bark all the time under the same circumstances in every town there is.

Besides, if your goose ever alerts them to an intruder, I bet they would be happy about it.

They are willing to compromise.

Things brought up:

If I would wait till later on weekends to let them out. (I said sure.)
Early is fine on weekdays.
They asked if we would be willing to go in on a better fence. The one between us now is old, dilapidated, and has missing fencing in spaces. (we will do it)
They will plant on their side of fence line.
They asked me if I could do the same on our side. (we will)

Their back deck looks directly into our backyard. Their bedroom window is on our side of their house.

I'm willing to move the noisier ducks to the middle bit of the backyard... besides Ranaya that would be all my bantam ducks. My mini geese only squeek, so they would be up top with the runners.

Moving Ranaya down to the back middle part of the yard puts her closer to the other neighbor who I have had problems with in the past. Currently they (the owners) are not living there, but we had a problem with their dog who bit me and he got put down, they hate me. They come out about 3 times a year to check on the house and do yard work. It's always a very tense time.

I know you're correct about my flock and a regular barking dog. I know also that barking dogs irritates my hind brain and I want to kill them. No kidding. Dunno why Ranaya doesn't get me like that. So, if they have been stewing and have been looking into the laws of me having a flock, and are even talking about property lines in relation to the duckhouse, I feel like as a good neighbor, I should do my best to accommodate them. It could work out that by them seeing me trying to change the problem, they will stop stewing about it.

A few years ago when I finally got fed up with their dog and said something to them, they stopped leaving their dog outside during the day and crated him instead. They rehomed him 5 months later to a family that was better able to manage such a hyperactive dog.

Oh, and the kicker... they are bestfriends with the owners on my other side who hate me. They bought the house originally to be closer to them.
