Now that I am getting netting over the aviary area, I am able to help him keep the girls in, and he is doing a great job of policing them. And he is also quieter. My doctor is amazed at the changes in me regarding my mental health since getting chickens.

Oh my - this is the improved version??!!!

Just kidding - can't wait to meet you! Talk to my family all the time about the crazy chicken lady of Hoquim...

The breeds that I'm wanting to get this year are:

speckled sussex
welsummer
marans (black copper)
lakenvelder
barnevelder
leghorn (not wanting the typical white. If they have cali, I want that. If not, then browns)

also would like
polish
japanese
delaware
cochin

but those last few are optional for me. I'd love them but would be willing to wait for next year on them... At this point, I'm leaning toward My Pet Chicken on the ordering...

ETA: I know the BC marans and barnevelders aren't available there, but I'm planning on getting them from Mike here in a week or two

Hey Ronnie - we got several of our chickens from that Monroe feed store. I like picking them out also.

BF wants a frizzle polish of some nature. He is a Persian cat lover so I got him a silkie. I debated about polish and frizzles as those were amoung the breeds I considered for him, but then Monroe had silkies and here we are. Recently I showed him some pictures of polish and frizzles and he is sold. He has come such a long way! He just loves his girls!

Anywho - is there anywhere around here I could locate a frizzled polish or will I need to look out of state? Anyone know?

Here's a couple more pictures of my new Oregon Minis

Weavegarden, I was thinking. They are not loud at all. They make little birdy squeeks, it's so amazingly cute. The smallest one I have is not a breeder because she was born with a funny walk... like her legs are in the wrong spot. I'm thinking if I get an odd one like that when I hatch from the breeding pair, you could probably squeeze one into your flock without anyone noticing...

Here's a picture of the smaller female, she's basically my live incubator for some of my runner eggs. She's standing next to one of the current smallest breeds of domestic geese, a plain headed roman. She's actually a pilgrim mini, not an Oregon mini. She's also a sweetheart, shy but curious.

edited to add they are an autosex breed, meaning you can tell males and females from each other at birth.

Gosh Donna. They are too gosh darn cute. Is the brown one the female or male? I just love the look of that one. I want a couple of those sooooooo bad. Do you know what size egg they lay, and if they are a once a year type of layer or lay more? Wouldn't it be fun to take them out to the garden with me each day and we could all weed together.

I suppose I could have them as indoor pets like the people from the link on your website do with their ducks.

My chicken helper has found a shed for me that looks like a barn. He says it is 10X10.... I think it looks smaller. Anyway, it is free. It will need some repairs, but I think it will be a great addition to my back yard. I can't wait til fall when the corn that I grow starts to ripen. I want to make my back yard look like a farm at harvest time. I just might have to have a party or something.

Oh, I needed to post. Camping is again held off on the chickens at the holding pen. I didn't think they looked healthy when I saw them yesterday. I am going to give them ACV in water, yogurt and some electrolytes too. Then we will watch them for the next week. I figure either they will improve or go downhill in that time.

Also. My MIL died this past week. Almost 90 years old. Anyway, I have been divorced for 30 years, so I don't feel the need to go to the funeral, but my son and dil are coming down tonight to attend the funeral tomorrow. They will be bringing my African Pygmy Mice. My dil has some, and they have reproduced. She is going to start selling them, and has suggested that I do the same. If anybody is in the market for the smallest mice in the world, I may have some to sell in a few months.

I really hate rodents with hairless tails. But these are so small that you don't really notice the tail at all. They are so cute with their tiny little everything. (Well, except the boys who are peculiarly well endowed) Shannon (dil) is setting me up with all of the bells and whistles so I can watch them play all evening long. I can't wait. I enjoyed them very much over Christmas at my son's house.

Do any of you know someone in the area that breeds bantams? Specifically silkies, cochins (frizzle) and black japanese?

DH is looking for some roos of each kind. I told him that MOST people would be happy to get mostly pullets :p And his Japanese roo is full of white feathers.
