Nah DHs Japanese still sounds pathetic, he's been crowing for a couple months now. Maybe it's just because I'm so used to hearing the "big boys" crow. None of them are as loud as my leghorn was though.

Holding off on my hatchery order till I find out the damage on the truck... You know how it is, finally get some extra cash, and stupid cars.. I wish we could all just go back to horses and call it good. The thought of a bunch of engineers "wagonpooling" and pecking away at their blackberries amuses me. But I'm also easily amused.

5 eggs yesterday. I know both my leghorns are finally laying, and DH thinks the phoenix is as well, he said she laid an itttty bitty tiny egg, and was sitting on it in the middle of the coop floor. I haven't seen it yet to see how small, but I'm sure it's adorable. I want a couple more pullets, as the boys I have are very handsome.

Nyrial, we have a Jap rooster and he used to crow just fine. Until we got a cochin roo last spring who is now leader of the pack. The old Jap rooster doesn't crow so much anymore. Did I read earlier you were interested in black Japanese? We are looking also, so please let me know if you find some local. I keep checking the hatching eggs for sale thread, but I think it's a bit early still. We got the ones we have from someone local who got there's from the Cree Farm lines. But our rooster also has a lot of white on him and looks more like a cross between a black/grey. We did breed him with our black hens, and have 3 of their offspring, one roo and two hens. The baby roo has even more white on him then his dad. My oldest DD really wanted the black Japanese to be her 4-H project breed, just not having much luck. We may move onto bantam cochins instead. Her black banty cochin roo got reserve champion cockerel at Evergreen Fair last year, so that's a good start. Also looking for black, BBS, or lavender banty cochins if anyone local has them!

I have only had to cull one because of non-meat reasons. But it is very a different feeling and stinks! A friend always offers up an egg to the ptb to nourish the soul, and does a ritual cleansing in the shower afterwards. Probably just a mind cleanse really, but she thinks it helps.

But crying works too!

I'm sure his crow is just fine. He just crows at a higher frequency (not decibel (dur me and my lack of whatever (I fail) (embedded parentheses)))and is a lot softer, so I find his attempts hilarious. There's nothing wrong with him.

Squeeky Wheel here ("the squeeky wheel gets the greese")

I sent a PM to Nifty saying that I thought Henry deserved to go in the next calendar because he only got 3 1/2 days of his pic of the week. So today, he sent me a PM back saying that he was up for another day. What a nice guy!

With Luck maybe Pinky will make the next calendar, and I can buy one for all of my bestest friends. (That's you too, Ronnie)

Hey Seed Buddies. I just posted a thread on TheEasyGarden and thought we might be able to include some people from there if we do decide to have a "Garden Party" in the Spring.

Link to the topic on TheEasyGarden: http://www.theeasygarden.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=27549

I
think it would be great fun. I am going to look into having a nursery host our party, if they have an area that is undercover or inside that we could use for the event.... Or maybe they could sponsor it in exchange for a visit and tour. They would certainly make some $$$'s out of that. Not to mention getting exposure to some garden enthusiasts.

I don't want to take away from the February Party at all. This is going to be a totally different thing. Not a potluck.... Focus on plants, planting, seeds and of course the poultry/waterfowl treat garden.

I think I would like to try those cantaloupes. Just a few seeds. Do you still have my address. I need to think of something that you need, so I can send it to you. You are just so generous.

I sell my duck eggs for $4 per dozen, chickens go for $3 per dozen. I give discounts if you bring your own egg crates or if you bring your own container. Money goes to pay for feed, right now the gals are feeding the flock all on their own. I'm so proud of the feathered darlings! We're in the process of setting up a feed co-op here, which should lower my feed costs quite a hell of a lot and provide them with better feed, so I'm thrilled.

My only problem with egg sales is that some of my gals, especially the Swedes, lay such huge eggs that I can't sell them in crates! Instead, I keep those for home use and bragging rights. You gotta brag, right?

Weavegarden,

Actually I think your activity on Washingtonians is great, I tend to check in once a week but need to come around more often so I've subscribed. Folks like yourself are the backbone of great online communities, don't ever think otherwise.

I'll hold out for paper (we try not to do plastic here), but I truly appreciate the site - I'm having a ball looking around the site. Thank you!
