I feel so mean! I just finished kicking the chicks out of the brooder. It must be time for the meat birds to come. Uf Da! I am just going to have to pray that the big girls don't kick the bejeebers out of the babies in the AM. Most of the girls are fairly nice, but everyone is going to need to find their place out there in the coup.

I have 4 Silkies that are now all being broody together. They are using all 4 of the nesting boxes on the right hand side of the coup. I think it bugs some of the other girls, but as far as I can tell, some of the big girls just shove Inky, Binky, Winky, and Snowball aside and lay their egg in the nest anyway. I swear the Silkie girls are having a great time trying to sit on the other girls eggs. We have been grabbing the Ink Sisters, and tossing them outside once or twice a day so that they can eat, but now I am going to let them sit awhile, and hope that they get hungry enough to quit being broody. I do adore the Sisters.

So Mike how is the 40 thing working for you? And you need to tell us how the Casino thing went.

I ordered some incense from Trista earlier today, and somehow the site let her know that I had paid her, but didn't bother to tell her what I had ordered. Dang I'm still not sure what I ordered. I usually print things out but of course not this time. Oh well I think I figured it out. At least I hope so.

Does anybody know of any hatcheries that are in our part of the world? like Washington, Oregon or Idaho. Looking to order about 25 layers and 25 meatballs. I am just thinking that if they don't have to be shipped so far then the survival rate should be better.

I don't Rob, but I have a couple things for you to mull over. First is that feed stores often have chicks for as cheep as having them shipped to yourself. But I don't know when they start stocking them.
And second, I can give my my shipping statistics from McMurray and My Pet Chicken (I haven't ever done the Official Meat Birds)
McMurray - 2 shipments to draw from - One for 39 chicks.... One for 27 chicks. 97% survival after 1 at one week old- None dead on arrival!
My Pet Chicken - Only 8 chicks ordered - 88% survival.

Needless to say, with 50 instead of 8, My Pet Chicken would have better rates. I do go and get my chickens as soon as I can, but I wait until they are in town. Our distribution place is Olympia, so they have an extra 24 hours in the mail. So, I think I have had pretty good luck. Have you had a lot of dead chicks?
