alright. i went to the feed store and a person there had a chicken with a bad tow once (but not like mine.... just a broken toe)

she said to cut it off. so i got the wound powder and some water soulble antibiotics and also stopped by my dog vet for an opinion from a picture.

he thinks it was broken. he gave me som lorzacane to numb it for a few minutes before i was going to. mom showed up and she cut it for me while my boyfriend held it tight. then i put tons of powder on it after it bled. the chicken walked on its foot right away....

so we isolated the chicken in a tractor with some antibiotic water and a little mix of food (layer, scratch, protein feed for roosters)
i might leave it in there for the night if it doesn't go below 40, cause i know how chickens are about the smell of blood...... and my coop is not clean compared to the lawn.....

so that is the update

Well done! I know that had to take some guts to do the first time, but it sounds like it cured the problem immediately. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, and I'm sure chickens function just fine short one toe...

Keep up posted, and I'm glad that worked out for you as well as it did. Excellent job in indentifying the problem, getting the right help and taking proper action quickly.

ah, just to clairfy. we cut the toenail clean off. hopefully that was the part of the toe that was only broken.... it seems happy now, dont know if the nail will ever grow back...

Well done indeed !
I would have done the same.
But did you wrap neosporin and bandage ?
Chickens scarcth so much that the wound will end up full of crud if you do not wrap it, and have to wrap it very well.
What did your vet say about wrapping it ?

Probably not, depending on how far back you cut, but well done anyway!

She'll function just fine.

I'm off for almost a whole day and there's 3 new pages. . . haha.

Today was GREAT. Lovely weather, which will improve through the week and even weekend then rain next week (but I need it after all this. . ) as I've been planting a LOT. My bachelor pad is almost done, my new Wheaten and Blue Wheaten (and Black Copper) Marans are almost ready to be introduced to the flock, and I may just introduce the Araucanas a little later, as they're feathered more, but smaller. . . Poor little things.

My gosh, speaking of all that - I've been getting such good egg selling business that I have more demand than supply now!!
th.gif
A lady wants 20 hatching eggs, I have regular customers who want 1-2 dozen eggs a week, the family needs some now and then, and I get a customer buying 1-2 dozen every other day. . . And I only get about a dozen a day.

The nice thing is that I've been making $12 a week, and this is only the beginning. . .

Can't wait until my Marans and Ameraucanas start laying!!

Illia my Cuckoos have been laying big sometimes double and triple yolkers since March !
Why are your Marans not laying ?
Have a light come on to wake them at 5 am ?
Funny the Brahmas and BO's get up early and go in late but the Marans are picky and get up late and go in early.
Ever have that ?
Sometimes I go to the henhouse at 8 am and the Cuckoos are still inside !
All princesses !

Poor Roo I bet he is feeling much better now, what a great owner!

ah this is a just started laying hen.... although the rooster must miss it right now since it is in the tractor watching its buddies on the other side of the fence....
i had hydrogen peroxide and put alot of the blood clot powder... then mom put its foot in corn starch for good measure... so right now its toe is caked with anticoagulant.... i will check on it when dark falls when i go to put the chickens away.
i did not wrap it because i did not think it would stay on and its toe is highly feathered.....

Trying to talk my daughter into driving to the Stevenson show with me this weekend! I drive for a living Mon-Fri so the 4 hour drive is kinda weighing heavy!'

I don't think anyone has posted where exactly in Stevenson is the show!? And what times?(in case I get a burst of energy!)

Otherwise we will be back at the auction in Enumclaw on Saturday!'
