Hi Reimirraa: I love your quote of the chickens are trained to come to the sound of your subaru. Too funny. I will go and look up your thread and read up on how your hens are doing. I just bought chicks...they are 8-10 weeks old now. I don't remember w/o looking at the calendar. All BR. I just love them. I am hoping next year maybe we can let some hens set on eggs...but I better read up on how first. I hope your 8 eggs did not die, that would be sad. The weather has been nasty, though, hasn't it?

Woohoo! I mentioned before that I was too impatient to wait for my 10 weekers to get to laying age, so I bought two speckled sussex hens to whet my curiousity in the meantime. Well it's been almost 2 weeks and we've been waiting for them to settle in and lay for us. This afternoon I found the first eggs!!! YAY! There were two eggs. I don't know if it's odd or not that they started laying on the same day. And on top of that, out of 11 nest boxes available both gals laid in the same box. One was almost white and one was such a light brown that it was almost pink!

I'm so excited!!!

I do best if I don't introduce them until age 5 months. If I get crowded though, as I am now, I'll put them in at 12 weeks, making sure they have a separate area with food and water where they can escape from bullies.

We tossed the 2 chicks, which I think are about 8 weeks old, out to the coop with the big girls last night. They were starting to stink up the house to a point that we couldn't tolerate it any more. We have been watching them off and on all day today. They made it out into the run by the afternoon, and DH found them between the wire fence and the neighbor’s wood fence. He rescued them and put them back in the coop. He also fixed the hole that they somehow found.

Well so I went out after dark just to double check that they were okay and still in the coop. I couldn't find them, and my heart was starting to freak out. I looked all over the run, and checked the coop at least twice. As just as I am about to go get DH to help me look for them, I triple check the coop and found the little buggers. They had managed to get up and into one of the nesting boxes together and Winkie one of the Silkes was roosting in front of them so that it was hard to see them. They looked so cozy and they just wanted me to go away because they were trying to sleep.

ChickenSal: So I put the chicks out as soon as they are fully feathered. In this case I think it was about 8 weeks. We have a lot of places that little chicks can hide from the big girls if they need to.

cmsdvm: I so sorry that your ducks died like that. I know how hard that is.

PS I would raise goats for meat if I had more land. There is a bigger demand for goat meat than this country produces. I would also want some goats for milking.
I would also love to have more coops and chickens, but I am stuck in a sub-division house, and I am already way over legal limits with pets. If one of the neighbors were to complain I could loose nearly all of my pets. So I have to control myself some, but some days I still get a wild hair and have to bring home one more critter. I love doing rescues. It keeps me moving and I feel needed here.

Took our 6 FBCM cockerels and 2 white silky cockerels to the "farmers market" at yard birds Saturday. I was prepared to give them away to keep from having to bring em home. A young couple came and was looking at the FBCM. She ask me how much and I told her make me an offer I don't want to take em home even if that means giving them away. She said $5. each. I said how many do ya want, do ya want ? She said well lets see you got 6 so that would be $30. ok I will take all 6. I told her if you take all 6 $25. DONE DEAL !!!! Then she said her sister had silkies and needed a roo. She tried calling her sister but no answer. I told her you come see me before you leave because if nobody has taken them I will give em to ya to take to your sister. Well she came back and I still had em so boxed em up and off they went. I had acomplished my goal in 30 minutes (not having to take 8 roos back home) and now had the rest of the day to enjoy the sun doing things at home.

Justbugged For scalding outside look into one of those "crab / seafood cookers" they have a large pot and most have a "basket" to put the goodies in, they have some that are electric and some that are propane and I think would be perfect for what ya wanna do. In fact I have one (propane) I will loan to you to try if you want. Then you could keep the mess out side. The cookers are not as expensive as they were a few years ago and many places carry them, like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Cabela's etc.

Your right with the meat goat thing, we as in this area cant keep up with the meat goat buyers. I have a few friends that sell and they are always sold out of them almost before they are born..

I don't know if I am totally ready to dive all the way in. I know nothing about it and want to kinda see how you all do it. Plus my babies are only 3 weeks old. We are handling them everyday so maybe we eventually can show. My blacks are from a Holderread strand so they may be my best bet.
