It's been my experience that broody hens don't poop much in the nesting box. The hatching eggs are for the most part still clean after 3 weeks of being sat on by the hen. I use DE quite a bit in the nesting boxes and coop also. I don't really think that lime would necessary in a nesting box. I would worry a about the possibility that it could cause chemical burns to the hen and chicks when they hatch. If you needed to add something else to help dry the nest, I would use something like stall dry. I really don't think that is necessary to add much more than a lot of straw for the hens.

The white one looks like a speckled sussex, but I am by no means an expert.

It will be interesting to see what someone else thinks

OH!!! I didnt even think of that. The guy I bought them from had a Speckled Sussex roo running around! I thought she was pretty and unique looking, and I just HAD to have her. At least I hope its a her. lol

Someone under "what breed / gender" said she looks like a delaware cockeral.

Delawares have that "Columbian" look with the black hackles and black tail feathers and their bodies are usually totally white, I'm stickin with speckled sussex.

Also to me the legs look yellow and to be an EE it would generally have green legs, but again I could be totaly wrong.

My netbooks screen has bad resolution so I don't see that great of color on it.

Don't mean to be a pain, but it is definently NOT a Speckled Sussex. They are dark brown, with white speckles, not white, with black markings.

However, it could be a Light Sussex, but they are pretty rare. They are white with black markings, similar to the Delaware.

Heres the Sussex page full of pictures of both chicks and adults at Feathersite.com.

My call ducks are hatching!! Hurray. I've finally got the trick to it: spraying the eggs with cold water once a day the last 10 days of incubation under the hen. This Saturday Elizabeth and I are loading up boatloads of Polish chicks to take to the Enumclaw auction. Now if I can just avoid bringing anything home with me...

OK!!! My new bator showed up today!!! What to put in that one? I really wanted to do quail but I need to buy new racks for that!!! Any suggestions? I already have pheasant, Marans and Ameraucanas going........lol Can we say "out of control"?

Darn now I want to go to the auction. I usually avoid the auction for fear that something will follow me home. I don't need anything to follow me home, but things have a way of doing it any way.
Yesterday it was 5 Helleborus plants. They were marked down to 5.00 each, and for gallon size plants that is a great bargain. So now I need to plant them into the garden.

Your a sweet lady! And your not being a pain, I have learned so much from you and so many others on here, but I have seen a couple of these floatin around. I have seen both but the first thing that popped in my mind with this ones coloring compared to the two I have seen recently was sussex something. Your probably right though!! Hope I wasn't being a pain either
