It's a very pretty bird! I have a Russian Orloff that I've had since she was a day old. Her beard developed pretty early on. I don't think this girl is an Orloff based on the smooth neck and no beard at all. On my page I have a pic of mine when she was 10 weeks old and she already clearly has a fluffy neck and face. I have earlier pictures too but I couldn't tell you exactly when it developed.

I have a speckled sussex that looks nothing like that girl but I haven't had her long and don't even know her exact age. She doesn't have the blue legs of an EE either. All I seem to know is what she isn't.

I just went down and looked (around 2 PM) and they only had a rooster one, and a yellow duckie, cat, etc but no more like mine.
I would mail it to you, silly !
No mine had nothing inside.
The one of a birthday cake has a tiny box present inside.

Broody hens usually do not poo but once a day, and that is when they get off the nest to stretch.
Lime is very caustic, that is why it kills organisms...and an active ingredient in concrete, mixed with sand and a little water can set it up HOT.
Not something you want to sit in, especially if there is moisture.
DE is sufficient to kill mites and lice.
Try to keep the lime off their skin, it burns.

The book is called "A Guide to better Hatching" By Janet Stromberg...and it is not that great.
Alot of pages of how to and not to wrap hatching eggs, how to artificially inseminate chickens including extracting the sperm from the rooster, .
But all in all, a few pages on actually incubating.
And that part is about the old incubator models, the big cabinet ones...and then there is a few pages on the history of incubation (ie: ancient romans and chinese...)
This book can be purchased from Murray McMurry and a few other hatcheries, I think I got it from Stromberg"s.
Leaving early to go to Moses Lake, Talk to you all in a few days.

alright i will buy actual straw tomorrow. i sprinkled alot of it under neath the nest box and a little in it.

i figured it was the best temp alternative to the old stray that was in it. see i have that because the eggs sometimes break or a chicken does poo.

i figured the lime would bond with all the ammonia in the coop.

it is too strong to breath on a hot day. and none of my sprayer breathing masks filter the ammonia once i disturb the dry layer.

mom is thinking of having the coop in a different location, but there are many drawbacks to its location...

what i need to do sometime is to get the crew to lift the coop completely and move it like 10 feet. and let it volatize or have a tractor scoop it elsewhere....
with my respitory system not the best they dont like me in the coop much.

but i like to think my immune system is better now that i constantly expose myself to bacteria

so buying straw is on my to do list tomorrow.....

Can I make a little announcement?!?!

This is in regards to the Snohomish County 4-H Poultry Program. In the past, we have sold Christmas Wreaths as our primary fundraiser. Our Poultry Superintendent for the county, used to make them with her husband and the kids would sell them. Her husband died 2 yrs ago, and so we no longer are doing wreaths.

This year we are holding a Garage Sale Fundraiser to fund the county wide poultry program. It is our ONLY fundraiser this year. It is in Maltby this Saturday (5/29/10) at the Hidden River Middle School off Paradise Road from 9:00-4:00. I hope to see a LOT of you there!!!!

Here's the ad on Craigslist with a few more details.

Thank you sooooo much! They are taking donations on Friday afternoon at the school, I believe it is after 2:00pm. Anything that is nice and in good condition would be greatly appreciated for donations, I'm sure they would take cash donations as well although that isn't expected! Shopping would be great too on Saturday!

I just candled before lockdown and am happy to report, 2 Lavender Orpingtons, 4 BBS Orpingtons, 7 LF Lavender Ameraucana and 3 Bantam Lavender Ameraucana have made it thus far! Was a tad disappointed in my bantams. I had a dozen to start. One was clear, 8 of them had blood rings.

I got them local too, so not sure what happened to them. But I'm happy with what seems to be doing well so far! Cross your fingers for a successful hatch for me!!!
