I swear when things like this happen,it is the hardest part of having and hatching chicks. Everyone has to answer the question for themselves. I have had troubles with a chick after hatch, and I know how tough it is when you know how hard the chick is fighting for life. But somethings are just not fixable. A Chick needs to be up and moving around and fluffy with the first day. If it is crippled and just hanging on the next day, it is very unlikely that it will ever be a functioning chick. Chickens have to have feet that work. I know that there will always be someone that can take a chick that is on it's last legs, or is crippled and somehow make it live, for a long time. But ask your self if you really have the time and resources to care for a special needs chicken that will need to live in the house with you for the rest of its life. Part of being good flock owners is knowing when to put your babies out of the misery, that they are in. We can give this gift to our animals.
I don't believe they (animals) have the sense of forever that humans have. All they understand is that they hurt, and can't do the things that they were meant to do. I know this will upset a few people here on the forum, but I also have read about a few of us being able to make that very hard choice for the animals that God has placed in our care. This is also part of caring for the animals as much as trying everything else we and others can think of to save them. I often contemplate and marvel at how strong life force can be, and of course how weak it can be when we need it the most.
Now I know that I am going to piss someone off really bad. So that person should STOP READING NOW! But here is how I do it with a chick this young. You can put it in a plastic container with a washcloth and put it all into the freezer. The little chick will just go to sleep.

I think that you did a very good job explaining this...I never seem to know how to explain it. Also, the how to is helpful if ever I decide to hatch any. It is very sad and I am sorry for everyone's losses. I do hope that no one gets upset from this post....but again, I think you did a good job in your explanation.

alright well after having 2 chicks in a row die because of the hen picked at the cord i saved this one black chick. i have had to throw 4 chicks into the trash. so i was tired of seeing them die.

so first i un shrink wrapped it. the membrane hardened aroung id. and i had it hatch but the cord was sticking to the membrane. i brought it home and mom cut the cord. not too much bleeding. i put flour and a band aid on it and had it in a wet paper towl with the hair dryer on it.

mom. i love her she is awesome. she found a heating pad, a spong (told her about humidity) and we placed the chick next to the sponge on the heating pad on low. hopefully this works its the best i got. the silkie hen keeps pecking out the cords and i just couldn't stand it any more. the past 2 days i told myself it weas inevitable but now i had to try.

i think what happened with some of these eggs is that somehow they didnt get turned enough and the yolk stuck to the membrane and so when they hatch they get up and the cord is connected to the membrane as they kick it away.... so they end up killing themselves...

so a few days of rehab if the chick survives and once it is fluffy and walking around i will add it back to its buddies.

on a lighter note a chick hatched and had egg goo on its face so as it fluffed out its face got stuck to the silkie hens feathers. it was weird i put one hand under the hen and lifted her so the chicks fall out and here is the chick hanging off the hens butt. i shook the hen to try to get it loose but it still stuck so i brought the hen out to try and separate it and then she got pissy and flapped and the chick got seperated. it looks alright besides the fact part of its face and neck never fluffed out.

i am just having the worst luck with hatching right now..... in the future i will get an incubator (2 years from now... the fully automatic brinsea looks perfect for $250)

This is a sensitive subject...I would probably do everything possible to save it also, I hate to see animals suffer though. I think you did a good job. And, we cannot always make everyone happy. It is impossible.

Well I am finally kind of back. Thanks to those who have checked to see if things are OK. Yes things are OK.
I have been busy building a new toy a long with all the normal home stuff. Not to mention that the knee is still really trying to make life difficult. I am pretty sure surgery is in order but that is not a doable thing for me right now so I am just gonna have to build a bridge and get over it.

This is what I have been building that has taken so much of my time over the last 6 weeks. The pics don't do the color justice. It is FLOURESCENT PINK ( Dianes choice).

Gee how could I ferget. I just finished a 16' x 22' addition to the chicken run which makes it a total of 16' x 38' of outdoor run not counting the indoor coop. Weavea's girls are doing well and seem to be happy. They are giving up some nice eggs. None of those NASTY WHITE

ones but some very nice brown and GREEN!!!!!

alright i figured it out i think all chicks now hatching have a combination of mushy chick syndromy and their yolks sticking to the membrane.

i was able to save one last night and it has fluffed out this morning and cheeps a little and look at me with big black eyes.... opps i think it imprintted on me. i have given it a few drops of hummybird food. (best i got nutriend wise short of giving it water)

tonight hopefully it will be more mobile and ready to be placed back under the broody.....
it bobbles its head a little and its still learning how to walk. its the first chick to ever want to be in my hands and stop chirping....

it has made me happy. i am leaving it under the heat pad for the day and hopefully it will stay under it.

I will over look what you said about the BEAUTIFUL white egg since you are a good friend. If it wasn't for those Nasty white eggs as YOU call them. I would be buying eggs at the store. My Brown layers have slaced off the last couple weeks

No rails amongst us, but some friends from SoCal (who go to Glamis all the time) have a sand 'car'..

you know--the whooped fancy schmancy rails? lol! We are looking forward to the vacation.

I have had the most awful run of luck with my babies in the past week.. one of my mama hens pecked the one and only(expensive) baby she had to death. Then this morning I got up to find one of my 3 Amigos (ducks) missing and found her carcass behind the hen house. Figures, the one night I can't catch them and leave them out with all the other ducks, someone gets EATEN. Now I am worried that whatever caught her figures on easy picken's at our house so I am going to build a temp overnight pen to put all the ducks in at night. THey are are sooo psychotic and hard to round up though. I think it was a raccoon?? my fence is secure, but not covered on the top, and I have a lot of trees in the yard....
