those orp babies are cute and feisty! they grab me most days. Peck! they are only 3 week balls of fuzz and are ferocious ; )
They and the lavender ameraucanas are growing well tho I lost one due to something I never anticipated. I put a few eggs under my blue silky and let her keep them once they hatched. one day I came in and the baby was tangled in her feathers dangling. it was quite dead. never seen anything like it.
The rest are growing like weeds.
I find I really like the orps so far.

Considered it, his poor fluffy bottom gets so caked already though, I have to trim it. Besides, what would be cuter than a little buff silkie poking his head out of this ?

TrystInn, cute story!!! Hope your rooster will be ok!!!

Monica, sorry about the chick you lost. That does seem strange!!! Yes, I am in love with the Orp Babies too....so cute!

Nyrial, that is a cute little animal tote!!! But the rubber one can be washed out easier!!! LOL!

Could you trim their flight feathers?

I probably could and will trim feathers. I just have never been able to do a very good job of this. They have a 8 x 40 ft run of their own, i just like to let them free range in the yard and it still has certain parts of the fence that has not been changed and is only 4 ft high. The new fence is either 5 or 6 ft high, depending on where it is. I have never been good at trimming wings....I just wish they would behave and be happy with the 1/2 acre I have fenced in for them. Either clip wings or I will just let them out when I can baby sit really-really well. They would hate not being able to be let out.

Well as you know my kids and I made a crude homemade bator out of a styrofoam cooler, a 40 watt bulb, fan and dimmer switch. We struggled with constant temp fluctuations the entire time. We started with 10 eggs and threw one away after a few days because it was obviously not developing. We could see that seven were developing and not sure about the two others because the shells were to thick to see anything.

As of this evening we have had 4 hatch, one on Saturday, day 19, 3 today, 2 of which were on day 20 and the other one, day 19 as we started it a day later. One of those was one of the two that had the thick shells and we were not sure about. Thank goodness we did not give up on it. I have not seen them yet as I am still at the ocean but my kids say that they look healthy.

Not bad so far for a first try using a crudely made styrofoam incubator.
