That may happen, DH think "MOT" is so hysterical, he will charge and peck and puff up every time someone/thing enters the brooder pen.
It is funny now, but will not be when he is grown...and he is the only roo hatched with 3 hens from Rhode Island White eggs..very heritage and rare, so like him or nor, he will have to stay and do duty for a little while...see his Daddy:

This is MOT's parents, rare heritage Rhode Island Whites not related to RIRs at all, a whole seperate breed.

Ok maby they weren't RI Whites then... I think they had a single comb. But I do remember them being huge. We have a picture somewhere of me standing next to the big white roo when I was 4, and he was just as tall as I was then.

Bet they were Leghorns, they are big, and white and single combed and famous like the RIRs for being protective and aggressive...some are super mean!!!

Oh more than likey. This would have been back in 85, so my memory might not be totally correct. lol

I spoke with Jean today, and she only had Mareks and ILT vaccine left. If you want Coryza or MG please let her know before Monday as she can get it in time for the show by that point. Picking up vaccine will save you a significant amount as shipping vaccines is pricey, not to mention it's a great excuse to attend a fantastic poultry show in one of the prettiest locations I've seen.

If you need Mareks or ILT it might be a good idea to let her know you are interested, as I am certain both vaccines will sell quickly to exhibitors (especially Mareks, which is everywhere in the USA).

Hope you guys can make it next Saturday. Stop by and see me, I'll be sitting at the sale tables with the feather footed gang or will be fussing over my birds (dewlap toulouse or silkies). I love to teach people about the silkie standard, as there is NOTHING like going over a bird firsthand.

Jen

By the way, another happy thought for tonight (and another reason to procrastinate over a paper for another 30 seconds)... I've got silkie eggs peeping at me from the incubator. Hooray for another successful hatch well underway.

So many things to be grateful for.
Jen

Congrates !
I wish I could score some MG from Jean, but I am not able to make the show...Can't see how I would get it here, I will have to order it.
You all have fun and please someone take pictures of the birds!!!!!

Back then there was not much to choose from, everyone had the basic chickens back then: Delawares, RIWs, RIRs, Leghorns and Javas, and Orpingtons, buff of course.
I remember giant red chickens at my great grandma's...they must have been RIRs and they were almost as tall as me...I musta been 6 or 7....
There were little "designer" chickens back then.
Where is everyone ???
Someone had a party and did not invite me ?

I know there is a show going on....where is Cheryl and Illia ??? Did everyone go to the show ???

Ive been here, but Cloe has been a TOTAL monster, so I have had my hands full. I didn't get any invite to a party. lol Thats ok Chickielady! We can throw our own party! lol

So I just got home from going and looking at the shed I mentioned the other day... WELL.... Its not exactly a shed... lmao Its a 4 stall barn with attached feed/hay storage... I can also have the 2 stall barn. I was also given an 10x20 covered area that has an 8X6 store room attached!!! I see a wonderfull good sized covered coop and run in my near future!!! Then there is the Pig barn!.. It has three sections, a middle room that is big enough to stand in, then two side pens... It was originally a chicken breeder pen, but was converted to a pig barn. If this little barn doesnt go with the pigs, I was told I could have it as well... Plus I was given any and all fencing, gates, sheds, tools!!! Oh my goodness!!! Its very unfortunate that this place was forclosed on, but... WOW! The amount of stuff that they need to move is emense!!! All out buildings except for the main shop, all fencing except for the perimeter, horse trailer, equipment, feed, pigs, dogs, horses, cats, all need to be gone by november...

I may end up fostering 4 horses for a month, until the lady realises that she is not going to find 4 geriatric horses homes... I have a feeling that they will wind up being put down within the next two months... There are 6 male prehensiled "sp?" toed cats, about 10 dogs, and I think 4-6 Pot Bellied pigs all needing homes...

There is a lot of work that needs to be done by november... And NOT just at this piece of property. I still have all the work that needs to be done here at home...

Im excited, sad, and WAY over my head with work. lol If things keep going the way they are, it sounds like my little farm is going to get a HUGE makeover! That and the excess I can pass along to others!

Boy oh boy!!! I may need some help...

I really wish I would have taken my camera! Next time I will remember. Theres a lot to do in the next few weeks, and more stuff than I could ever store... So I will take what I can, and will pass thethings that I can't use onto others. So many water troughs, sheds, pretty much everything basic you would use on a working farm...

QUESTION TIME!!!!!

So my girls are laying almost everyday. I have a feeder with oyster shell in it and a feeder with layer pellet food. I only have 3 hens and some days I get 4-5 eggs! However sometimes I am getting an egg or two that just have the soft membrane around the egg and no hard shell.

Should I be doing something different?

Is this normal?

The 3 chocolates are my girls.
