I got my two little baby chicks this afternoon! A Buff Orpington and a Rhode Island Red... hoping both will be hens.
So I have to tell you, I feel like the worst chicken owner ever. After picking up the chicks from my sister 45 mins away, I brought them into my office for the rest of the day. I set them up and put the heat lamp on... apparently too close - I gave my sister my probe thermometer to use with her chicks. About 5 minutes after the chicks stopped chirping, thinking they were sleeping, I went to check on them. They got heat stroke! The BO was bad, but I knew he would make it. The RIR was BARELY alive!

I grabbed them both and rushed to the bathroom. I gently ran room temp water over them and tried to have them drink from my hand. The BO rebounded quickly, but I thought for sure the RIR wouldn't make it. I was nearly in tears! Eventually the RIR would kind of sit on it's own so I put it in a little box under the light - but not too close this time! Once it dried off and drank some sugar water, it was making an improvement by the minutes. Probably 45 minutes after I found it nearly dead, it was running around trying to hop out of the box. I'm soooo relieved!

Still going to keep a close eye on them the next few days.

I'll post pics when I get home...

I have assorted hatching eggs right now although the girls are moulting, and spradic laying but the boys are still very active as boys will be...let me know if you are interested in any hatching eggs, and since I have coupled up 2 and 3 breeds per coop, I will have Silver Cuckoo MaransXlight Brahmas...and Silver Cuckoo Marans X Silver Cuckoo Marans and a few Silver Cuckoo Marans X White Wyandottes (yes Cheryl ! The girls are finally submitting to the big boys !)
I also am getting sporadic Blue Splash Marans eggs(( Blue, Black, splash)) and they are just started laying but the boys have been active for weeks.
Let me know...and how lucky you are to be on the islands !!!

The closest a 250 watt infrared heat lamp should ever be to a surface is 18"...........anymore and you are looking at ignition, as in FIRE.
Then when you first set it up, (and this is were a length of bendy wire comes in handy) back it off so it is not burning your hand, and seriously put your hand down where the light is pointing...back it off til it feels good to you.
And then wire it in place.
After that you have to watch the babies, they will tell you when they are cold, by huddling under the light...and if too warm, they will pant open mouthed and go as far as they can away from the light.
I am so sorry your babies may be hurt, and wish I could help...I do things like that.....good luck...
I do this same thing with the light (all of us do) when weaning a batch off the heat lamp, raise it up a few inches everyday will make less and less heat below, and finally shut the light off...when the babies are used to it and fully fledged.

AH HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I'm such a spastic!

Sorry, that was mean, wasn't it? I shouldn't say that. Bad me. Bad me. Go to your room and have no one to talk to and here....take this glass of wine with you. Shut the door and no communication....be quiet in there.....Bad me.

The chicks are now safe and sound here at home. They are comfortably napping in their pen

I have done some reading on these threads and I've decided to order a special, safer heat lamp (I can't recall the name right now). I still feel horrible about what happened earlier.

I have 4 10-week old chicks who are now in their "big girl" pen, so it's not like I'm new to regulating the heat in a chick's environment. I feel like a fool. All I can figure is that maybe since the box was tall but narrow, maybe the heat was trapped in it... because the lamp could not have been closer than 18". After the ordeal, I took a box knife and cut the box down by half and didn't have any more overheating problems. I guess it was a lesson I will never forget.

I do wonder if the RIR has a sour crop... I've noticed, even before today's debacle, that every so often there would be a clear slime come out of its mouth. While trying to cool down the chick I slightly pushed on its crop and it forced more of the slime out. What do you all think? The chick is only 3 days old.
