Good Morning Everyone

My dogs keep them away most times here too. but the young ones either are stupid or brave. If they hang out in the yard I bring out the traps. If the pass through I leave them alone.

I am so glad we do not have to deal with coons, and possums and such.. everyone goes in lockdown every night but we have never had an issue

Sometimes I miss more than 40 pages. I just try to keep up to see whats going on around me.

The GMO feed is cheaper initially but soybean is in everything we eat that is processed. It is because it is cheap and easy to grow. It has to be roasted to make it edible. I dont eat soybeans if I can help it and have cut way back on processed foods. If it is of questionable health to me why should I feed it to my chickens that give me eggs. If I wanted commercial quality eggs I could just buy commercial eggs. If I werent eating the chickens it would be fine, for show or for just pets, to give them soybeans like that.

I didn't even know we had 'possums until about a week ago, a breeder told me an Opossum bit her dog. Wow. I thought those were limited to the south and what-not.

No way! I always see them splattered on the side of streets and on the highway.

Gack!!! Their fur is nasty, half bald, half short and long scratchy guard hairs...YUCK...But I have had alot of people tell me they are good to eat...like a big squirrel (also a rat with hair on its tail, but cuter)
As far as I know, there are Opposums everywhere...except the driest regions.
They eat anything,,,LOVE your garden...little holes chewed in the squash and pumpkins...they adore dog food, they are thick from here south to the end of the earth.
There must be an Opoosum for every citizen in the Kent Vallet, evidence by the possum carnage on the road as you drive to work in the morning.
There is ba-zillions in Canada too...and as far as I know, they are native here in the USA from coast to coast..the only masupial in North America, glad we have no kanga-ROOS here
lau.gif
but some platypussies would be fun here don't ya think ???
I bet T-Hi would have to have some to match her ducks

Last year in Nor Cal, we were at our property there and had 5 Silver Cuckoo Marans pullets and we caught a possum every other day there, and when I let the baby girls out to play they saw a big possum in the hav-a-heart trap and attacked it !
Very brave while it was in a cage !

It is my understanding that these people raise their own everything, the corn even has more protien in it as a result of their superior farming practices:::they spread man-ure everywhere.
See?
Men-opause...Men-struation and Man-ure or should we say man-oooower ?
gig.gif

they care for their soil and thereby have not sucked every vitamin and mineral out of it.
Did you know that 30 years ago, and more, an ear of corn had vitamins in it ?
And leafy greens actually had so many vitamins as to make you dizzy...now days the soil that is farmed is so raped...that the same corn has little but starch in it, and the greens are pale, and have little to no vitamins in them at all...fiber and water is all.
You must put back what you take out.
You do not have to, as a farmer, few compost...they usually sell feed lot man-oower to composting companies that bag it and sell it to the masses for their gardens.
Few spread man-ooower on their fields...these guys spread man-ooer, and have awesome Tatonka, they raise and butcher and pluck their own cornish, and sell eggs from layers and assorted chicks.
But I will imply to exactly his method of growing soy...in the mean time, it is far better than the nasty decomposing fish heads and spines I see down the coast...gak!!! and we wonder where the collibacilosis comes from !
Rotting fish heads and spines cooked down and freeze dried is so nasty.
It is far from a natural food to feed a chicken.
Maybe good for bears.
idunno.gif

I love salmon, and all fish, but, chickens never fished nor did they live anywhere where they had fish to eat, and feeding 1 animal to another unnaturally like that just grosses me out, kinda like mad cow.
Kinda like soylent green.

P.S. Soylent green IS going to happen.

OK, seriously posting stuff now...about the feed, my birds LOVE it !
As soon as you unzip the bag, it knocks you down with the wonderful fresh strong nutty smell, clean and fresh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish I could taste it but I have celiac disease so cannot....they love it !
And the crap I had before from Purina was first and second ingredients CORN...nasty, corn.
My birds like a little corn, but let's face it, corn is sugar, and we diabetics know corn is a no no.
It has few vitamins and minerals.
I like the vitamins added here, especially the selenium and copper, (but do not feed to sheep), other than that, it is all purpose feed.
Other news...look what just came up the driveway, big rattling -loud- noisy- smoking- stinky -nasty-old drill truck...they did not call first...but apparently they were drilling far south and we are on their Monday or Tuesday list, and rather driving the rattling noisy heap all the way to Elma, they wanted to park it here...OK we said.
Now too bad we do not know how to operate the dang thing or we could make a heap over the weekend!

Now some fun stuff...Silver Cuckoo Marans cockerals, awesome boys...Salt and Pepper for lack of names yet..they are striking and tall boys, only 5 months old, but on the job and fertility is fantastic:
50801_joys_black_java_eggs_014.jpg

this is pepper, he has darker hackle, which I like...
50801_joys_black_java_eggs_016.jpg

salt and lt brahmas girlfriends, that should be strange but wonderful...
Incidently, my 2 year old brahmas moulted severly this fall, and when their feathers came in this time, there was almost solid penciling across their back
sad.png

More: You all remember Duke my OE roo...spectacular boy, has yet to mount, but has learned to crow and has a great beard and abalone mother of pearl colors all across his back.

50801_joys_black_java_eggs_013.jpg

Blue babies

50801_joys_black_java_eggs_005.jpg

it was their turn to come out today...and
50801_joys_black_java_eggs_018.jpg

the dust bath tray...found at Home Depot, they have a huge one for $12 and the medium here is $5.69, and a small one...they also have a slanted one for paint that is no good for this, so I have the mortar trough, add 1/2 to 3/4 bag of playsand, a big scoop of DE, and 1/2 a can of poultry dust, mix and leave.

The birds will find it, especially when it is so muddy out that they cannot dust bathe outside, and that is when the mites get a foothold...I love these tubs, bigger than a cat box and way cheaper and really strong.
50801_joys_black_java_eggs_017.jpg

OK, all of you off to HD now, (that is not Harley Davidson
lau.gif
)
Oh and before I get off my big soap box, remember to install the dust bath tub indoors, so it stays dry.
BYE!!!
