I thought about that...if they were anything but bright red would the girls turn their backs to the roos ?

I know there are others that can knit...LaSombra do you knit ?
I think it would be a good idea to try it, especially for those sub-zer areas, I doubt the roo would care.
Be cute to put a poof on top, too...Justbugged, do you knit ?
I do not knit but have all these ideas....

I don't knit. I do quilt, and crochet. I would have to study the design to be able to make the hats stay on a roo. I really like the idea.

Like mini mad bombers hats, you know, with ear flaps and a tie under the wattles ?

I will study the soy encluded in this feed more...and in the mean time, it is far and away a better choiice than 1) corn, and 2) dead fish.
Gack!!!!!!! Woodland brand Game Bird starter/breeder 28% for example, has listed as it's first several ingredients as: Dehulled soybean meal, Ground Corn, Canola meal, Corn distillers (??), Dried grains, PORCINE MEAT MEAL, and then the preservatives and vitamins and salt follow...This is unacceptable to me to feed my birds #1 Dehulled Soybean meal, corn and dried ground pig meat-by products.and they charge you a mint for this stuff !
I think it was in the $40 a bag range.
Salmon would be a better choice but it not a natural feed for farm or game birds either.
I am not allergic to soy either, but I do not consume large amounts of it....I am deathly allergic to wheat, and gluten, so I avoid that.
The phyto-estrogen qualities in soy have bothered me...some women adore it, I am not so sure it is a good thing for men/boys to consume.
Del's chick starter first several ingredients:
(you will love this, it is so sneaky and vague)
"Grain Products (?), Plant protein products (you can bet your bippie that this is soybean meal), Processed Grain by-products (what?
This sounds like the left-overs after they distill at booze factories), then it goes into mon-calcium phospate (?) and assorted vitamins, salt and ash.
Cool stuff there !!
I like my new feed MUCH better and it seem this stuff from Del's DOES have soy anyway..along with garbage !
Start n grow is almost identical to Del's chick starter !!
I do not have a new bag of start n grow, if anyone has one, please post the first 5 or 6 ingredients please...wowzers, I am so glad I do not feed my babies this garbage any longer...later, gonna be in Monroevia today.

My ex husband and I once spent the night at an inn in western Germany. When we came down to breakfast, our soft boiled egg was being kept warm by a crocheted egg cozy shaped like a chicken. It was adorable. Maybe you could crochet some of those. I 'd buy those.

You are in fine form this morning.

I just realized that it is 2:40pm in the afternoon, but given that I was still awake a 4am, I think that this is still morning for me.

I wish that I was better at the crocheting thing now. I am very good at granny squares. I can even crochet them it the dark with no more than the little speck of light coming from the car radio with the car turned off. DH, “The Boy”, and I were out on one of the forest service roads not long after I had bought a brand new minivan. The car had 2500 miles on it when DH ran over a rock and took out the oil pan. He got us pulled out of the way, and the realized that if we were going to get off the mountain before tomorrow, that he and the “The Boy” were going to have to hike back up to the top of the hill to get cell coverage. We were half way to Yakima out on Forest Service road 70. While they did that I had my bag of crocheting, and you won't believe how fast I can crochet when I think I am going to have to sleep in the car all night without a blanket. I still don’t know how the three us large sized adults and Puppy were going to sleep in the back of the car that night. (Puppy is as big as an adult person also.) I am still very grateful that it never came to that. I would have gotten a blanket big enough to almost cover us, if we had needed that night. The guys were able to get a call out, and DH's Dad and brother came and saved us that night. The insurance covered the oil pan, and the motor never blew up while I owned the car.

So I am going to have to think about the egg cozy that looks like a chicken. It sounds like it was really cute. I loved going to Germany in 2004. We got to see a lot of the country in the week we were there. The best part was getting to go to the Towns of Triburg. We got a fabulous Cuckoo Clock from the store where the Germans buy their clocks. DH works for a German company, so in theory he was working that week.

I agree with Chickie that the roos need quilted hats with ear flaps. I also think that the hats will need little pom poms on the top of each hat. I think that neon colors maybe the way to go or maybe a few in camo too.

We were in Westphalia. It was a business trip. My ex imported and exported hardwoods. He was buying wood in Europe. While he went off to look at logs in Normandy, I got to spend a week in Paris.

ok at what age does a rooster show its feathers? I have a white wyandotte I think is a rooster but not sure yet. All I know is it is causing a ruckus and the buff orp roo and this weird wyandotte clash a lot in the coop.

How does its comb look? Its face? Does it have waddles that curve down with the form of its head/neck connection? (making it look like it frowns)

At about 4 months, one should get true saddle and hackle feathers forming. They should be short, but definite glistening pointed feathers.

Before that, a cockerel's neck will look odd and thin, as it is just beginning to grow hackle feathers. A pullet's neck will be nice and curved, and will slope well into its back.
